CHAPTER 1
V00_9781477215869_TEXT.pdfKris Krangle
Are you Santa Claus?
the little girl asked the heavy set white bearded trucker in the booth behind her, who gently shook his head no. With snow falling heavily the interstate had been closed to let the snow plows try to keep ahead of the storm. Christmas was only a few days away and many people were already on the roads to visit family and friends for the special day. The huge storm that had dropped down out of the Gulf of Alaska had pretty much shut down all traffic in the mountains of the Western U.S.
What’s your name?
continued the little girl as the gentle eyed trucker looked up from his last bite of cherry pie.
My name is Kris,
he replied softly.
See, I knew you were Santa!
She almost shouted.
Kris’ laugh didn’t help his innocence, because it was a dead give away of Santa’s and his belly bouncing in the bib overalls only made the little girl’s case stronger.
You see, I know one of your other names is Kris Kringle, and that only makes sense to use that one when it’s not Christmas yet. Otherwise people might bother you when you’re traveling back and forth to the North Pole,
she continued matter of fact.
Before Kris could say anything the little girl’s mother showed up. Excitedly, the little girl told her how Santa was sitting in the booth next to them, and that he would be able to find them after all for Christmas. The mother, with sad eyes looked at Kris, and quietly apologized for her daughter bothering him. The young mother looked worn out from driving, but there seemed to be something else in her countenance that Kris couldn’t quite put his finger on.
He had always been heavy from all the years on the road, but since his sweetheart had passed on life had lost a lot of meaning for him, and eating filled a lot of his time. He had also let his goatee blossom into a full grown beard for the first time in his life, along with letting his hair grow long. The years had given
