FOREWORD
The book Occupational Diseases and Health Awareness through Multimedia: A Case Study among Women at Risk Employed in Coir Retting in Kerala, India
tries to bring home awareness of occupational diseases connected with coir industry through an innovative interactive multimedia application. Over the last quarter of a century technology involving application of multimedia has developed in leaps and bounds and particularly in the last decade its use has become so widespread reaching practically every citizen and covering every walk of life. A multimedia designer needs to rapidly explore numerous design ideas early in the design process, as creating an innovative design is the corner stone of creating an innovative multimedia learning platform itself. Dr. Divya C.Senan, Assistant Professor, Sree Narayana Training College has undertaken literally a challenge to give awareness to the coir workers, especially the women workers on the health hazards using a multimedia application. It has been proved in her study that the package is effective in making awareness among the target population.
A teacher being a social engineer is responsible to the whole society. Even though extension work is considered part of the responsibility of teachers in higher education, practically few teachers involve in such activities. Teachers are expected to involve in social awareness activities which benefit the students as well as community. The multimedia application prepared by Dr. Divya C.Senan as part of her UGC Minor Project intends to promote awareness on health and well-being among individuals, communities and populations, enabling them to address the broad determinants of health in order to reduce the vulnerability and risks to ill health and disability throughout the life cycle, especially among women. Usually such project reports slumber in some dust laden store houses. Here, she has undertaken a laudable initiative by authoring the present book which will enable its readers to have a close look at the coastal women engaged in coir industry and an innovative awareness programme. The coastal women are at risk population, so vulnerable to over work and exploitation from family and society. To combat the very common occupational diseases, they have to be made aware about it. Within the government and outside, use of multimedia application for alerting women at risk and explaining to them the common occupational diseases is very appreciable and it is really necessary to sensitize every person concerned about the different risk factors.
In this respect, the unique book prepared by Dr. Divya C.Senan is a timely and appropriate intervention. In very lucid style she has succeeded in explaining the basic concepts and theories related with multimedia applications very comprehensively. With excellent references and review of related studies this book could provide every reader to enlarge his knowledge to be prepared to understand and deal with normal threats and associated health risks.
The author has made all efforts to organize the book in a clear and easy to use format. The future and current professionals and other avid readers will be using it for understanding the interesting topic which would be rewarding them as well as reassuring the efforts made by the author by generating adequate serious interest in this important topic.

PREFACE
Kerala is a major coconut producing state of India. Kerala coast is strikingly bordered by a string of backwaters, generally running parallel to the shoreline. The backwaters of Kerala provide water front for several major and small scale industries, amongst which coir retting industry ranks first. It is an important sector as far as economy of Kerala is concerned. Most of the coir workers are from socially and economically backward classes. The industry provides direct employment to more than 3.5 lakhs workers, majority of whom are female, who find this as the their principal source of income. The raw material for the industry is obtained by immersing the husk in water for 8-9 months. Here, mainly conventional methods of retting are practiced. Retting of husk presents unique and extremely serious problems along the coastal belt, changing the hydro ecology of the water body. Besides the ecological degradation caused by the liberation of organic wastes during the retting process, the unhygienic conditions prevailing around the area results in health hazard problems to the people engaged in this cottage industry. In the retting sites, aquatic pollution is caused due to organic wastes like lignin, tannin and polyphenols. Low pH and oxygen content, high BOD, chloride and alkalinity leads to anoxic condition, adversely affecting the flora and fauna. Air pollution also prevails in these areas due to the release of hydrogen sulphide, methane and carbon dioxide. Common diseases likely to occur among the people are filariasis, eye diseases, skin diseases, oedema of lungs and headache due to the inhalation of poisonous gases. It was found that the unhygienic conditions prevailing around the area results in health hazard problems to the people engaged in this cottage industry.
The most striking aspect of the retting industry is that the workers in the retting site spend almost the whole day in the yard and find hardly any time to spare for other educational and cultural activities. The wages given to them are very low compared to their hard work. As a natural consequence their living conditions are never improved. Their financial and epidemiological conditions remain to be very low. The area around the retting yards is inhabited mainly by the community engaged in coir industry. Hence, job related diseases are likely to occur among these people. Majority of the women are engaged in retting industry, irrespective of their
