      Together Again

      Life And Travels Of Two Parakeets And Their Caretakers

      This is a biography, romance, and travel history about two pets, small pilgrim parrots Carlos and Angelina, and also those who cared for them. It is a short story of the separation of the parakeets that are finally reunited, followed by the touching episode of the final caretakers, Mary Margaret McLean and Tall Tom Overhill, who had to choose between advancing their relationship or loyalty to careers and geographical settings. Will the parakeets and ultimate caretakers ever meet again? How do they deal with separation?

      This tale takes place in the 1930s and 1940s and describes the diversity and local color of several geographical locations, details that sometimes have just little to do with the story. In the United States, canaries, brought from the Canary Islands in the 1600s, were the primary caged pet birds until the period near the Second World War when parakeets started appearing in the United States and when this story takes place. The sad demise of one of these pilgrim parrots is followed by a human event much more heart-warming.

      The origin and idea for the climax of this story came from a most influential historic poem, Evangeline by Henry W. Longfellow. Together Again is about the process and travels making it difficult for two birds (and two people) that were separated to finally reunite.

      The idea for this tale about two parakeets, dos budgitos, was suggested by Charlie Kahn of Kennebunk, Maine and the story is sprinkled by a couple of Charlie’s illustrations and also by some scenes from the various locales that were temporary homes for Carlos or Angelina. It is hoped that this little story will stimulate interest in our abundant bird life, people and nature itself. This story of the two parakeets and caretakers begins in Southern California after the young budgitos (parakeets) were imported from Mexico during the Great Depression. These early immigrants to the U.S. leave their nest and their travels take them through many places ranging from New Orleans and Maine to Honolulu, through World War Two and the great 1947 fire in Southern Maine. You might ask, who would be interested in a tale about two parakeets? In the book The Birds Our Teachers Dr. John Stott, author and former Rector of All Souls Church in London, suggests that birds can teach us many things, such as not to worry, but to trust God in all things. Irene said Alex taught her that we live in a world populated by thinking, conscious creatures. Not human thinking. Not human consciousness.
