About this ebook
Patricia Rosset-McQueen
The author was born in Ireland and arrived in New York in the 1950s. Her cousin invited her to Santa Barbara, and she finally chose San Francisco to work as a secretary. San Francisco suited her better, and after a few years, she found her husband in St. Mary’s Church, California Street—just her cup of tea. She married and had three handsome sons. The author is now a grandmother of two beautiful boys. In her sixties, she got restless again and took to studying, got her California High School diploma with As and somehow got into SFSU, graduating with a BA in liberal studies in 2005.

A NEW MILESTONE
Congratulations on the 60th anniversary of your birth!
Now you are a sexagenarian; do not fear, fume, fret or be blue;
But look ahead to the pension, your reward in another two.
Don’t look back to past mistakes, but forward to future bright;
For the past is dead & gone; but the future is still out of sight.
All learn from past mistakes; to view people & events in a better light.
So be positive, hopeful & cheerful and you’ll not lose but win;
For life is what we make it; & we must take some knocks on the chin.
Just stay the course, keep smiling, & make the best of every day.
Take the good with the bad, pray & you will find your way;
To rise above adversity, people or events that get in your way.
Life is a mixture, good & bad, so we must find the silver lining within.

A SAD MEMENTO
Janus, Roman God of doors, of beginning & ending,
The two-faced God of old with faces blending,
Who had two faces in positions opposing,
The God of gates also, of opening & closing.
Now Linda was a modern real estate sales lady
Who believed in a very special lucky charm
A porcelain, cream-colored, gold-flecked bowl,
A thing of beauty for all her clients to behold!
She displayed the bowl in each home to be sold,
And feared harm would come to her treasure of gold.
It was a memento from her secret lover of old,
And helped her with many sales of homes to secure,
Because of the beauty of her perfect, porcelain treasure.
Like Janus of old, she once had secret lover & showed two faces
She presented one for her husband; & another for her lover.
Her lost love was a perfect lover—kind and gracious.
But he left her because she could not decide,
With which of her two loves she would abide.
So now the empty, perfect bowl reminds her,
Of the unfulfilled, half-empty life she left behind her.

A TREE
What is a tree? A tree is a gift of the natural world.
It grows from an acorn small & can grow extremely tall!
It’ is an article of beauty to behold, a living, leafy green-growing thing.
Its leaves reach up to the sun, rising like a prayer at dawn of day.
It is anchored by its roots, in earth’s strong sustaining clay.
It’s bark is a hard, enduring, protective coat surrounding all
It grows each year, like a circular, ever-expanding wall.
It produces flowers, nuts, fruits, cones, or other edible things.
It grows steadily each year, protects & nourishes the forest green.
A tree is home to many creatures, animals both large and small.
Many bird species build their nests there & return each year to call.
It also gives shelter from the chase & sun, when large cats pall.
The woodpecker makes his home in the bark & pecks steadily away.
The owl too, takes his daily rest & flies out to hunt at close of day.
To hunt for prey—as all must do, for like the bat, he hunts by night.
If trees are home to animals dear, what then will be their fate.
If all the trees are cut down for mankind their needs to fill?
Where will all the animals dwell; or will they thrive and live?
That is the big question now that all men must answer give.
Should we treat all animals alike & let each species live.
Or will our greediness destroy that which we should protect.
For God gave this planet to all, both men and animal elect.
Then should men not strive to protect the other species too
And make planet earth safe for animal & man who dwell within?
That is a big hard question now, can man and animals coexist?
