Prologue The River Case is Closed

Homicide Inspector Strong and his wife Mildred are at a fishing lodge out of state. The second day he snagged a body out of the river and had it disappear the same night from the lodge’s cooler where it was placed. The local authorities arrived two days later.

He wondered, ‘who can I trust?’

The Inspector called his two detectives and a patrolman back in Seattle to come and assist him. The Inspector also contacted his fishing buddy Ted McClearly who is also the Regional FBI Director in Seattle to assist. It appeared the case will cross state lines.

Homicide Detective Janette Rage will play the newly wed wife and Patrolman Samuel Jones will play the husband. They registered at the fishing lodge which lost the body as Penelope and Stan Jones. Homicide Detective Smith is the senior Detective in the Inspector’s Division. He came along to play Penelope’s father.

The FBI provided the car and all other identification for the three of them. Their FBI cover went so deep that it would never be broken. They are who they say they are from their birth certificates, driver’s licenses, fingerprints, and marriage license.

The FBI agents stand off until they were needed.

With the Inspector’s guidance the murder case is closed and given to the local authorities. He turned over to the FBI their part of the case. See ‘The River Case’ for all the details.

Janette Rage and Samuel Jones (better known as Rage and Jones) start the drive in the FBI car back to Seattle. Detective Smith left with the FBI to go back home.

The lodge has a pleasant trap for those leaving. They provide a free lunch starting at noon on your check out day. You are almost assured of staying at a local motel for the night.

Four years before ‘The River Case’ in the small town of Dugway, several hours drive from the fishing lodge a meeting starts. Dugway in the past was a bustling mining town until the mines played out. Over the years the town had been slowly shutting down. All the younger people have moved out, leaving only those on pensions and government checks remaining in Dugway.

One of the few buildings still in use but run down is the Town Hall. The Mayor calls a town meeting in the former town-council’s meeting hall. All forty-seven residents are present. The small raised platform has Mayor William standing at the podium. Seated behind him is his brother Judge Bill. The judge is also the Town Clerk. Next to him is their only police force, Officer Brent.

Mayor William says, "Dugway is almost dead, there is not enough people to even keep the feed mill open when you all stopped planting wheat. When the filling station closes we will close the town down.

Someone stands, What else is new? Bill’s idea of a speed trap is crazy.

Another old fellow shakes and grabs onto the chair in front of him as he stands, We need a quick cash crop and a long-term revenue source. I don’t have the money to even repair my tractor no less plant any wheat.

An old, gray, haired women stands, William, you’re the Mayor. I don’t care if you don’t draw a salary. You are living on the city pension. Do something.

One younger fellow, still in his sixties says, William, we still have the mines. Figure some way to use them. Maybe as a state park. Let them clean up the town and we open the mines for viewing.

A mummer passes through the meeting. William feels he is about to lose control of the meeting. But he has no plans or even an idea of what to do. He either called the meeting or they would have held it without him.

An unknown woman in the back of the room stands, The mines maybe perfect for our use. They have a constant temperature, humidity, and reasonable security. As for an immediate cash crop, we could plant some wheat fields with your guidance and help.

Mayor William says, By the show of hands we accept the offer. It is accepted, sit down Harry. I can see it past, we are not going to waste my time counting.

He pounds the gavel several times to get the crowd quiet but not everyone sits down.

He yells, The measure passed. I will get the deal in writing. I will let everyone know how it is going. This meeting is adjourned. All of you go home.

    Not everyone went to
