About this ebook

Rage takes her first vacation back home. Jones laid a peck on her cheek when she left. She is having a problem with it being so unexpected. At home Granny Jane is wondering about a bow for Janette.
The sheriff has a death from cattle rustling that has been going on for a time. He asks Janette for help. It appears the rustlers were after two prize bulls. Old man Smith is shot twice with the same gun, likely not an accident. No one seems to know anything, and the beef is not showing up within 100 miles.
The state police take a week to review the file, adds nothing but rustling.
Janette discovers the south valley was a central hub for the old missile trains. It was top secret, moved down to classified and for some reason not de-classified per procedures.
The land is used by many to graze cattle. It is assumed to be all government owned, why ask and have them fence it off.
Rage will need more help than just the single sheriff when the rustlers send in several truckloads of men. They want much more than just the cattle.

    Chapter 1 The Vacation

Driving home on vacation, Rage relives the incident in the men’s police locker room with Jones before she left on vacation.

I am walking to the men’s police locker rooms. I feel it is like watching a movie I are in.

Several officers are outside the men’s dressing room. One opens the door and invites me in.

I smile and say, Thank you.

The rookie patrolman is a little taken back.’

I hear a loud yell in the men’s locker room, Female in the area.

In three seconds, it is just as loud, No problem, it is just Rage looking for Jones.

I watch Jones pull up his jeans, which he quickly zips up. The shirt is pulled over his head.

He says, Why can’t you wait outside?

I answered, Crime waits for no man, besides the oncoming shift needs to get their blood pumping to go and find the bad guys. I am going home to see the folks. I will be gone for several weeks, a real vacation.

I am now up close and in Jones’ personal space. With my shoes on and his off, we are about nose to nose.

Then he does the unexpected thing. He tilts his head slightly and gives me a peck on my cheek. I have no idea why he did it.’

I am so surprised. I get into my car and drive. I feel the cool air on my cheek and then I am in the mountain pass.’

Rage stops at a motel after a seven-hour drive. She washes up before going out to eat. Except she does not wash the cheek with the peck on it.

Before it gets dark again, she will be home.

    Chapter 2 Getting Home

Rage pulls in to the old homestead just before sunset after a 12-hour drive.

Her three brothers, mom, dad, a bunch of rug rats, and some older kids are all waiting for her. After a few hugs, kisses and tears, grandma comes out from the back of the crowd.

Grandma is just a miniature (Janette) Rage. In fact, they share the same first name and hair color. Janette bends over to hug grandma.

Grandma asks only one question, Do you have a bow?

Rage smiles and touches her left cheek, which has yet to be washed.

She responds, Now grandma that is best left till later.

The family gathers around the table to have a dessert, and then it all breaks loose. The cake and ice cream are over four large table with the little ones running all over the place.

Around 9 pm, most people leave, and Rage can grab a breath. She brings in several cases and she has her old room back. The boys growing up had to share a large room.

This room seems smaller than I remember!’

Chapter 3 First Day Back Home

Detective Rage has been in the homicide squad for several years now. She is the best to have in a shootout. Jones can attest to that fact. They have been in some tight spots together. No one is sure of their exact relationship and likely neither do they?

She carries a matched set of twin 45, pearl handled, silver Colts. She can fire both Colts at the same time and put 16 rounds in two separate 3-inch circles at 30 yards.

Her red hair, some would never say to her face, matches her spirit.

Just seven days after graduation and four days on the job, Detective Rage showing up for duty, finding herself in a fatal multiple shooting investigation. Detective Rage has been involved in more fatal multiple shooting investigations than most
