A Christmas Wedding - Kimberly Grell

Chapter One

The weather had a piercing bite to the atmosphere and everyone knew the sky would let loose a barrage of icy flurries to blanket the ground just in time for Christmas. The McGuire family loved this kind of weather and anticipated creating memories at their cabin in Helen, Georgia. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Chattahoochee River, this Northeast Georgia village has a rich history. Their cabin, enormous and quaint, had a large, neatly trimmed yard with muted colors on the interior. The intriguing aspect of the McGuire’s cabin was it had been featured in a television series showcasing beautiful lodges in the mountains.

Shortly before leaving for Helen, Georgia, Brandy McGuire, the eldest of the siblings, caught wind of spectacular news from her younger sister, Elaine.

I’m getting married! Elaine squealed happily on the phone.

That’s amazing! Brandy replied, while hiding her self pity. Do mom and dad know?

Yes, I spoke with them earlier and told them. They’re beyond excited!

Brandy could practically hear the vibration her body emitted through the phone. She was happy for sister but she dreaded it. She knew the family get together would be nothing but pressure into settling down. She was not looking forward to it. Brandy’s family, for years, have asked her on numerous occasions when she’d settle down and the answer was always the same. When the right one comes around.

Have you left for the cabin yet? Elaine asked.

I was just getting into my car when you called. Brandy answered.

Oh, I’ll let you go so you can make it there safely.

Bye, sissy. Brandy responded with the nickname she had for her sister.

In Brandy’s mind she went through the several scenarios of how conversations would ensue of her needing to find someone. All the thinking had her insides tied up in knots. She’d love to find a man. A good man. It was never possible, or seemed that way to her, with the sea of men streaming by every day. Her standards were high, too high as she’s been told frequently by friends. What is so wrong about wanting a kindhearted person who wasn’t out to do bad things or cause mental anguish? Something kept her searching though with no signs of giving up so easily.

I better get going before I’m stuck in this weather. She spoke to herself softly.

She examined her surroundings before backing out of her driveway, heading toward Georgia 75 en route to Helen. She lived South of Helen, in Atlanta to be precise. Luckily, she missed rush hour on the busy highway and drove the couple of hours to her destination. While cruising to the Alpine village, the scenery changed from city to mountain country the further North she drove. The roads turned narrow and became windy the closer to the Bavarian-styled town she drove toward. Magnificent pine trees lined the roadways and grew larger with each mile.

Her ears popped slightly the more altitude she gained in the region. This was common as Helen is situated neatly in the mountains. After turning onto a back road and following the windy cemented path, the town of Helen appeared suddenly. Brandy would always lose herself in the sudden sight of the town. It was like a proverbial slap in the face, you turn the corner and it’s right there.

Brandy followed the road to Edelweiss Strasse and ended her journey at the McGuire cabin that overlooked the Chattahoochee river. She pulled her car into the spacious driveway that lead the eye to yard and cabin itself. Her straight medium-brown hair fluttered in the mountain breeze as she stepped out, pushing away her chin-length locks
