    This book is the first of a series helping you be prepared to be able to take care of yourself or family during an emergency whether it last for less than a day, several days or even longer.  Having spent several years as a volunteer first responder with Emergency Management where I lived, I saw first hand how people were affected when natural disasters such as a tornado, ice storm, or a flood to name just a few.

    Doing a little planning up front can save a lot of problems when dealing with the situation will be a lot harder.  In this volume of the series, I will cover several things in the area of communications using a combination of items such as FRS/GMRS, Satellite Radio, Amateur Radio and even cell phones in a way that you probably havent heard of before.

    The only thing that is worse than doing only a little planning is doing no planning at all.

    Ron Nutter has written for technical trade press since 1990. Over the years he has written for InfoWorld, LAN Times, TechRepublic, NetWare Solutions, Network Solutions and Network World. He has written and produced the HelpDesk ToolChest podcast with Ron Nutter for Network World during his time writing for Network World.  In addition to that he wrote a weekly column for nearly 16 years.  He has a background in broadcasting.  He assisted with the production of a live multi camera television broadcast serving in the roles of operator, director and engineer dealing with both video and audio.  He working in similar roles at at a cable television company.  He has written and produced several different podcasts.       This eBook is written from a point of view of someone who has made heir own preparations for times of emergency/disaster. There is usually more than one way to do anything that I will talk about here.

      Introduction

      It seems with each passing day there is an increasing number of events where a little bit of preparation in advance would help save some headaches and make it easier to deal with.  The problems can range from a small civil unrest as a result of local problem to a power outage related to weather or equipment failure to something more catastrophic such as an ice or snow storm over an area of several counties or more.  While there is usually help available at a state, regional or national level, it take a while for that help to arrive where it is needed.

      Having spent several years as a volunteer first responder, I have dealt with a variety of natural disaster - a tornado, a flood, and a few others. In this situations, I have been what can happen if you aren’t at least a little bit prepared for when something happens.  This book will be looking at things from living in an Urban/Metropolitan area.

      This first book, Are You Disaster Ready? - Communications (Part of the Natural Disaster Survival Series) is to help you get some ideas on what to plan and prepare for to maintain contact between members of your family both in the immediate area where you are as as well as in other parts of the country or the world.  Take what you see here as a guideline for what to consider doing in preparation for what we all hope won’t happen but may in the grand scheme of things.  You may not need to do everything listed here.  Don’t worry about trying to do everything at once.  You can do things gradually over time.  Remember the only thing that is worse than only doing a few things is to do nothing at all.  Other books that will be following will cover other areas of Disaster Preparation that should be considered by everyone trying to be ready for what you hope will never happen.

      As with any plan, it will be a good idea to periodically review what you have done.  See if there are any updates that need to be made to your existing preparations.  As technology changes or improves, you may see that some of the preparation you have done in the past is no longer needed.
