Horseshoe Crafts - Barbie The Welder
Horseshoe Flower
Difficulty:
Decorate a backyard garden or potted flower with this adorable horseshoe flower. Paint several of them bright colors and place them along the driveway as a way of welcoming guests, or give them as gifts to friends and family! Local gardening supply stores, small roadside produce stands, or farmers’ markets are wonderful places to sell these should you decide to craft for profit. Small local stores, or western tack-and-supply stores, also might be willing to sell them for you on commission. Whether you keep them for yourself, give them as gifts, or sell them, horseshoe flowers are sure to get rave reviews from everyone who sees them.
What you will need for this project:
• Six horseshoes
• 3/8 or thicker rebar or round bar 18
-24" long
• Grinder with a cut-off wheel
• Clamp or vise
• Marker
• Wire brush
• Ball peen hammer
• Chisel
Instructions:
Lay five horseshoes on the bench in a circle, front side down, with the open ends touching each other. Tack each horseshoe to the horseshoe it touches to form the flower.
Place the flower weldment on the bench and butt the rebar/round bar up to it in a position that looks appealing to you. Tack weld it in place. Take the last horseshoe and mark the center with a marker. Clamp the horseshoe securely and cut it in half using the mark you made as a guide. Then, take the two horseshoe halves and place them together with both ends touching to form a leaf. Tack weld the two halves together and then weld them to the flower stem. Weld the entire flower together at each place it was tacked.
The flower can be adapted in several ways. You can use more horseshoes to create a larger flower—just keep in mind the weight of the flower in relation to the thickness of the stem and its ability to hold up the flower. You can also make a horseshoe heart and use it as a flower. (See Horseshoe Heart project.)
Note: The majority of these projects have the same instructions regarding cooling, cleaning spatter, and adding finishing clear coat/paint. Please see the instructions on page 11 from the Welding Basics section for directions on how to finalize your projects.
Four-Leaf Clover
Difficulty:
Not just for St. Paddy’s Day, these lucky four-leaf clovers make a perfect year-round gift for your Irish friends or someone who just needs a little bit o’ luck. Alone or integrated into another project, these four-leaf clovers would look just as great hanging over a horse stall as they would in a country home.
Flower shops, farmers’ markets, and country stores selling home decor are great places to sell your crafts. Leave the natural metal color or paint them green and they are sure to be a big hit!
What you will need for this project:
• Five horseshoes
• Grinder with a cut-off wheel
• Clamp or vise
• Marker
• Wire brush
• Ball peen hammer
• Chisel
Instructions:
Take a horseshoe and make a mark down the center. Clamp the horseshoe in the vise or to the workbench. Cut the horseshoe in half using the mark as a guide. For this project, you will only need one half horseshoe for the stem of the four-leaf clover. (Save the second half to use in another project.)
Lay the four remaining horseshoes, front side up, on the workbench with the open ends touching each other. Then place the half horseshoe—the stem—where two horseshoes come together.
Once you are completely happy with the layout, tack it together where each horseshoe touches. Check to see that the four-leaf clover is flat to the workbench and weld it together everywhere it was tacked.
This four-leaf clover can be adapted using the concepts from several other projects in this book. Make a four-leaf clover jewelry rack by standing it up, welding it to a horseshoe base, and welding horseshoe nails to it. (See Standing Heart Jewelry Rack project.) Weld a four-leaf clover on top of the mug rack instead of a single horseshoe. (See Mug Rack project.) Stand the four-leaf clover up on a horseshoe base and weld horseshoe nails to the back to make a four-leaf clover picture frame. (See Picture Frame project.)
Note: The majority of these projects have the same instructions regarding cooling, cleaning spatter, and adding finishing clear coat/paint. Please see the instructions on page 11 from the Welding Basics section for directions on how to finalize your projects.
