The year was 2015 and university students were protesting over the increasing cost of higher education. Exams were postponed, university buildings burning, students being arrested, and people even marched to parliament!

As someone who studied Business Management as part of his degree, I didn’t give it much thought, nor did I focus on a solution.

But in 2016 I was a student again. Some of the methods found in this book I developed when I assisted my fellow students and lecturers during the #FeesMustFall Reloaded phase. And during the 3rd quarter of that year I spend 1 week writing of what would become the basis for this book.

I am a South African and by default it means my countrymen and I will talk straight to each other, even more so when it comes to business. Unless you have any experience with the South African culture you will not comprehend how irritating the words maybe or could be is to us. It is not that we are rude but getting to the point is what matters.

Expect to find the same tone in in this book. Respectful but very straight forward.

While the content of this book is largely written for academia you will NOT be reading an academic article and very much less a thesis either. This book has been purposefully written in such a way that both an academic and a non-academic will be able to grasp what is being said. There will thus be no need to consult a dictionary, and the chapters are kept purposefully short.

Hopefully after you have read this book, you will agree I’ve reached my objective in assisting you with practical methods to reach and educate your intended groups of people.

Why Distance Education?

From Christian denominations teaching their church members around the world, to the USA military educating their soldiers stationed on foreign military bases, and of course by numerous universities and companies around the world. All of them use Distance Education to grow their organizations.

It has been used for hundreds of years, because it is cost effective, profitable, and it works!

The term Distance Learning can be used to describe any learning that takes place apart from direct onsite contact with a teacher or lecturer.

a) First students studied through posted printed material (Traditional Distance Learning).

b) Then via Radio and TV stations, Video, and DVD/CD’s/etc., (Digital Learning).

c) Then they sat in front of a PC (E-Learning).

d) However another form of learning has also emerged and it is known as "M-Learning".

Mobile Learning

"Necessity is the mother of all inventions"

This phrase has been said plenty of times when a practical solution was created to solve a problem or challenge, in most cases to solve a daily irritating problem.

A patent is when a person legally registers a new method of performing an action be it software, mechanical, or a combination of the two. It is not difficult nor expensive to register a patent, and patents can also be lucrative assets. There are even companies who do nothing else except purchase patents and will generate revenues through license agreements.

Every year around the world in different countries you will find what is known as patent expo's. This is where individuals or companies will offer their intellectual property or inventions unto potential buyers to either invest or to completely purchase their ideas. But as any inventor will quickly realize not all patents will be bought or will even receive any interest at all.

Patents that get the most attention are those that have a useful practical application. It should then be no surprise the patents that are normally stolen or used without proper licensing are those that have practical application(s). And there have been billion dollar court cases regarding patent thief!

It can be argued the origin of distance-learning has many roots, from not enough institutions to educate individuals, cost factors, as well as time, etc.

However in the Middle East you will find some countries adopted distance-learning (including M-Learning) have done so due to the laws in their national religion. In some of these countries men and women are prohibited to work, and studying together in the same environment due to the national religion.

The focus of this book is not to discuss the potential moral issues that may arise of such separations, but very much applying one of the methods used to educate citizens of different genders and at the same time respecting a religion. This is where M-Learning comes in because it has a practical, everyday application. But unlike a patent, M-Learning can be used by virtually anyone, anywhere, at anytime.

M-Learning can be defined where knowledge is transferred to an individual via SMS, video's, pictures, reading, web browsing, audio (podcast), Internet or even via a phone call, etc., all taking place on a mobile device.

Besides including learning on Smartphones and Tablets, there are some minor disagreements as to whether Mobile Learning also includes Laptops as well. However for this specific book, M-Learning will focus on Smartphones.

Why Should Any Organization Seriously Consider M-Learning?

a) It provides a much stronger system to replicate Traditional On-site Education when compared to other forms of Distance Learning.

b) Compared with Traditional On-site Education, M-Learning may be a very inexpensive method to educate students.

c) Evaluation committees will have direct access to the lecturing material, they will thus be positioned to better audit the quality of the content rendered by lecturers.

d) Students can be reached any where in the world as long as they have an Internet connection.

Thus it is also possible to recruit lecturers from around the world and employ them on a contract basis for a specific module, or even to lecture part of a module.

e) Students are not required to sit in a specific location during a specific time of the day to access their learning material. This will better enable them to study at a time best suited for them.

f) Lecturers will be able to record their lectures in advance, which in turn will free more time up for other duties such as administration etc., and of course to conduct research.

g) There will be no disturbance during lectures, no student will be asked to keep quiet or to leave class. How awesome will this be for a lecturer, and more so for the student who actually wants to learn?

h) Due to there not being any lecture halls and no maintenance of those buildings, no student toilets, less security guards, no electricity bills from buildings used by the students, or multiple groups who needs to be lectured, etc.,
