How To Use This E-Book
This Explore Guide has been produced by the editors of Insight Guides, whose books have set the standard for visual travel guides since 1970. With top-quality photography and authoritative recommendations, these guidebooks bring you the very best routes and itineraries in the world’s most exciting destinations.
Best Routes
The routes in this book provide something to suit all budgets, tastes and trip lengths. As well as covering the destination’s many classic attractions, the itineraries track lesser-known sights, and there are also excursions for those who want to extend their visit outside the city. The routes embrace a range of interests, so whether you are an art fan, a gourmet, a history buff or have kids to entertain, you will find an option to suit.
We recommend reading the whole of a route before setting out. This should help you to familiarise yourself with it and enable you to plan where to stop for refreshments – options are shown in the ‘Food and Drink’ box at the end of each tour.
Introduction
The routes are set in context by this introductory section, giving an overview of the destination to set the scene, plus background information on food and drink, shopping and more, while a succinct history timeline highlights the key events over the centuries.
Directory
Also supporting the routes is a Directory chapter, with a clearly organised A–Z of practical information, our pick of where to stay while you are there and select restaurant listings; these eateries complement the more low-key cafés and restaurants that feature within the routes and are intended to offer a wider choice for evening dining. Also included here are some nightlife listings, and our recommendations for books and films about the destination.

Explore Toronto
As Canada’s largest city and the capital of the province of Ontario, Toronto is the epicenter of the country’s business, arts, and finance sectors. This sprawling and ethnically diverse metropolis is equally the center of culture, showcased by its incredible food scene and year-round exciting festivals.
Located along the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, Toronto sits in a strategic location at the convergence of several key portage and trading routes. No wonder it was crowned capital early on, during the 18th century, of what was then called the province of Upper Canada. A constant influx of new residents from around the globe continued to migrate to this area throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, contributing to the making of what is now one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world.

Geography and Layout
With a downtown core of soaring skyscrapers, dwarfed only by the free-standing, iconic CN Tower, the city radiates in all directions, aside from its wide lakeshore edge to the south. The CN Tower is visible from almost anywhere in the city, unless it’s a particularly cloudy day, while Lake Ontario is always south, no matter where you are.
Toronto, like most major North American cities, is made up of the downtown core, or City Centre, surrounded by a patchwork of neighborhoods. What’s different here though, is that Torontonians don’t just work Downtown. They eat, play, and sleep there, too, making Downtown a lively center full of restaurants, cafés, bars, stores, theaters, parks, galleries, and places of worship.
Easily walkable, the City Centre, bounded by Bloor Street to the north, is undoubtedly the heart of Toronto. Many of the city’s main attractions are clustered here, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Kensington Market neighborhood, Chinatown, the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium, the CF Toronto Eaton Centre, the St. Lawrence Market, the Distillery Historic District, the Hockey Hall of Fame, and three major sports stadiums.
Streetcars, taxis, and the subway help keep these and other sights close by when it becomes too much on foot. There’s even the option of cycling around the city on dedicated bike lanes and utilizing the convenient local bike-share program (for more information, click here).
The routes in this guidebook will begin in the City Centre, covering the most recommended attractions and highlighting some of Toronto’s best neighborhoods including the Waterfront, the Toronto Islands, Kensington Market, Chinatown, Little Italy, and The Annex. Finally, several routes will cover worthwhile destinations outside of the city, including the Toronto Zoo, Niagara Falls, and the Niagara Wine Region.

History
From a provincial backwater to the most prosperous center of the country, Toronto has seen its share of turbulent times, but it was also a beacon of hope for new immigrants right from its humble beginnings.
First Nations began inhabiting the shores along Lake Ontario approximately 10,000 years ago, favoring the area for its rich fishing and hunting grounds, and easily accessible water routes. Over the millennia, these indigenous societies continued to thrive, having no European contact until the 1530s, when French explorer Jacques Cartier journeyed up to the edge of the Great Lakes. Cartier made first but limited contact with what where known as the Iroquois peoples.
Almost a century later, in 1615, French fur trader Étienne Brûlé traveled the Toronto Trail between the lower and upper Great Lakes. He spent some months with indigenous tribes in the area, including the Algonquin.
It wasn’t until the 1720s however,
