Sobre o autor

Architect Stefan Beyazov was born in Sofia in 1936. He comes from a family of architects and has carried on the tradition in his own family – his wife, son and daughter are also architects. He graduated in architecture in 1960 and without any hesitation chose design as his special field. He was also actively engaged in public service related to his profession. Until 1990 architect Beyazov worked for a number of design bureaus and after that established his own bureau. His rich portfolio contains many award winning designs, among them social and cultural centres in the towns of Smolyan and Ihtiman, a hotel in the town of Bansko, a kindergarten in the town of Koprivshtitsa, a children’s complex in the village of Kovachevtsi and many other buildings. In the last forty-five years Stefan Beyazov has worked on all town plans of Koprivshtitsa. His public activities involve the following positions: Chairman of the Chamber of Architects, representative of the Architects’ Union in the National Parliament, member of the Sofia Municipality Counsel, etc. Stefan Beyazov has received government awards and distinctions for his professional achievements.

I have never read such a book about the creative process – so sincere and so genuine in its simplicity. When one is deeply sincere, one inspires belief.

I am starting my notes about the craft of architecture out of an unfulfilled desire to help you master the profession by joint work. I find nothing unusual about the lack of continuity today because back in my younger days I faced the same problem with my father. Each one of us must make his own painful path through life, which is perhaps the true path. Some of the things I could have learned from my father through joint work would have most certainly speeded up my professional development but it never happened. The truth is that I was much more influenced by my father, architect Vassil Beyazov, by the imagery and individual style of his works rather than by general reflections on how architecture is done –something which, being a young practitioner, I craved to find out and understand. I also think that it was the great disparities in our characters that made close collaboration impossible. He was a man of exceptional talent and this helped him work with great creative freedom and ease. I for one was the more rational of the two and achieved everything with much pain and hard work. I’ll dwell on this in more detail further on.

The express purpose of these notes is to share my experience with you as honestly as possible, without claiming to have made extraordinary achievements. I’ll try my best because when I was young, I remember getting very angry every time I read or heard a brainy quote by some famous architect because
