A short overview of Solution Focus for leaders
How Solution Focus (SF) can help you achieve what you need
Sieds Rienks, a leader in a mental health organisation, was faced with poor client feedback about the organisation, low morale, difficulties in recruiting and financial losses. Traditional problem-solving methods and change programmes had been tried without success.
Instead, Sieds and his leadership team took a solution focused approach to turn the situation around. In two years, the organisation had a financial surplus, excellent client feedback and motivated staff. You can learn more in Chapter 1.
It is probable that most leaders will say they are solution focused. However, you can get to a solution via different routes. If the problem or change you have is "tame¹", and the problem definition is clearly agreed, then traditional logical problem focused tools and methods work well. If the problem or change is messy, involves lots of people with a vested interest in the outcomes, the outcomes are uncertain and the causes may be interconnected, traditional problem focused methods are, well… problematic.
Practitioners of the Solution Focused approach acknowledge that there is a problem yet consider this may be unrelated to the solution and so do not analyse the problem or seek the cause. Instead, these practitioners have people collaborate to:
Describe the future they want when the problem is resolved, or the change has happened. What will they or others notice is different in that future?
In the case above, Sieds invited not just the leadership team but all those involved to create the description
Look for glimpses of that future working in the present or past, as this might provide clues to achieving a solution
Sieds encouraged people to find what was working and build on that
Identify the resources and capabilities that are available to achieve that future
Sieds and his leadership team, despite the adverse situation, inspired people to identify existing resources and capabilities throughout the organisation to help bring
