The Story Of My Mother
()
About this ebook
This is the biography of Madam Arit Dan Abia, a humble yet exemplary figure. In a world where traits of kindness, love, selfless community services and forgiveness are rare to come by, Madam Arit demonstrated genuine love and true concern for all people regardless of race or standing during her lifetime. She gave all she could to people and never wanted much for herself and what little she had, she shared. Her philosophy was underpinned by the divine exhortations that there is more happiness in giving than in receiving. She therefore sought to live by this mandate.
Madam Arit provided leadership and direction not only within her matrimonial family but also within the large community that she lived. Despite her limited formal education, her involvement in social and political activities within and beyond her community provided inspiration for many women. This work is an attempt to give a narrative of her life. In doing this, it is hoped that young girls and women in general will be motivated not to allow their birthright and social circumstances to limit their contribution to the society in which they find themselves. Her story reveals how young girls can take decisions in difficult circumstances of their lives. It shows how women can strive in the face of adversity and unfortunate events in their lives to still make a contribution to their community. It is a story of a loving, committed mother and a virtuous woman.

Dedication
This book is dedicated to my late father, Ete Dan Abia, who was inspired by God to meet my late mother, Madam Arit Dan Abia (Snr), through whom we (their children) all came to this world and were raised as kind, generous, caring, honest, God fearing human beings and taught how to become productive members of society.
Foreword
The book begins with a short profile of the parents and the society into which Arit was born. She lost her father at infancy and naturally had a difficult childhood, but she was determined to succeed in life without losing her dignity.
Her mother, Madam Akon Okpo, sent her to live with her eldest sister, Iquo Eyo Emene. By then, she had married to Mr Eyo Emene, who was from Edem Inyang Uda.
As an international businessman, Ete Dan Abia was trading between Cameroon and Nigeria and in the course of his business venture while passing through Edem Inyang Uda River Port met young pretty Arit and they got married. In the early days after their marriage, he used to be accompanied by his wife Madam Arit Dan Abia (Snr) on some of his trips. When she started having children, and her responsibilities became too numerous, her husband advised her to stay in the village, thus creating the necessity of keeping two homes.
The death of Ete Dan Abia in 1970, leaving his wife, Arit, and 10 children, was to put more heavy responsibilities on her shoulders early in life. Mmama (as she was later popularly called) remained faithful, hard-working and humble in the face of all these difficulties. She was determined to succeed and her hard work yielded many fruits, as evidenced by the grace of God upon her family.
The involvement of Mmama in church, community activities and briefly in politics and business, has received some spotlight in the book. She was one of the women leaders of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), a committed member of the Methodist Church and a woman leader of Afaha Ekpenedi, Esit Eket Local Government Area for many years. The author has written a short, but very informative biography of Madam Arit Dan Abia (Snr.), a woman who lived a life worthy of emulation. It is written in a language that is accessible to even a moderately literate reader. I recommend the book to everybody, young and old, as the protagonist is a role model to the youth and women in particular.

From the Author
If God made it possible for me to choose a mother in the next world (if, at all, such a world exists), I would not hesitate to return to the womb of my late mother, Madam Arit Dan Abia, and I have no doubt in my mind at all that she would happily accept me back as her daughter.
Apart from the fact that I resemble her both in looks and in the way I act, Mmama herself was so special to me. She lost her father at infancy, which resulted in a difficult childhood, but she was determined to succeed in life and, by the grace of God, her hard work paid off and yielded many fruits. She was humble without ever losing her dignity, and also realistic, sympathetic and respectful.
