INTRODUCTION
A caregiver is a person who provides "care" for people in need of the physical, psychological and developmental aids. Caregiving refers to assisting and supporting the individuals with chronic illness, physical disability, and emotional well-being. Mostly women play a vital role of caregiving when compared to men. The "Self-care for Caregiver" promotes self-care, and helping the caregiver to recognize their own needs.
The caregivers assist round-the-clock and might experience physical exhaustion, which can further lead to anxiety, depression and burnout. Every caregiver should be able to recognise their needs to prepare them for stressors of caregiving. Thus, they should take regular breaks, be self-motivated, be positive and never cut back on leisure activities.
When caring for someone with chronic illness or any other serious health issues, isolating from others while giving prolonged care is a stressor which might cause excessive stress to the caregiver. Self-care really helps the caregivers to handle themselves emotionally, physically and mentally. This also helps them to continue providing the care for others.
Caregiving within the family is more important, I realised this when I lost my grandmother recently (while writing my part in this book). She was 83 years old when she passed away because of cancer. I have realised in the recent past that I had spent very little time with her owing to my busy schedule and other priorities. In hindsight, I wish I had spent more time with her and expressed my care for her more when she was around. When we forget to care about our "self-care", we forget to care for others. Self-Care is also a part of Caregiving.
At times many caregivers think that having time for themselves to rest or to be with family and friends makes them selfish, because there is someone who needs help round the clock. However, when the caregivers’ need is taken care of, then the person they are caring for will benefit as well. A caregiver should identify and acknowledge their feelings, when they have a right to all of them.
In this book, we cover the following topics:
Types of Caregiver and Caregiving
Problems and Warning signs of Caregiving
Caring for caregivers and Caregiving in other species
List of Resources for Caregiving
Global Perspectives of Caregiving.
