Shih Poo Bible And The Shih Poo - Susanne Saben

Introduction

The 1990s saw a great explosion in the purposeful crossbreeding of purebred dogs. Some owners worked to develop the positive traits of their dogs. Some bred for the personality of the dog; others worked to develop a hypoallergenic dog. Still, others sought to weed out negative traits or genetic issues by purposely mixing breeds. These dogs were known as hybrid breeds or designer dogs.

Because the poodle is known as a hypoallergenic breed, many of these purposeful crossbreeding experiments involved either the Standard Poodle or its related breeds – the miniature and the toy Poodle. Often, the miniature Poodle was utilized for crossbreeding with other smaller breeds. One such mixture involved the tiny Shih Tzu, a popular small breed dog itself.

The resulting designer dog has become one of the most popular hybrids across the world! The Shih Poo generally inherits the hypoallergenic trait of the Poodle parent breed. Also, the breed inherits the significant intelligence of the Poodle. This makes the Shih Poo one of the most trainable breeds available today. The Shih Poo is also considered a great companion pup, and because the designer dog is slightly larger than the Shih Tzu parent breed, the hybrid is better suited to families with children of all ages. This playful designer dog loves to be a part of an active family. They love joining their humans on long walks, and you’ll find they love to play fetch and tug-of-war. By the same token, they are great indoor companion dogs as well.

This guide is designed to assist you as you bring home your new Shih Poo and develop a bond that will last for years to come. We’ll cover a variety of topics, including the history of the designer dog as well as training, living with a Shih Poo, and even possibly breeding your dog later. Congratulations on bringing home an intelligent companion who will be enjoyed by the whole family; this energetic companion will be the center of attention in your home for years to come!

Sweet and smart – the Shih Poo truly is the best of both parent breeds blended together.

CHAPTER 1

Shih Poo History – Where Did They Come From?

The Shih Poo is known as the teddy bear dog. While this moniker does reflect the looks of the Shih Poo, it is also a nod to the sweet and easy-going personality of the designer breed. The Shih Poo is one of the most recently developed hybrid breeds. In fact, this crossbreed has only been around since the late 1990s. Even though a recent addition, the positive attributes of the Shih Poo have made it an immensely popular hybrid! Although little is known regarding the exact origins of the Shih Poo, fans of the breed often study the history of the parent breeds in order to learn everything possible about this hybrid. This is appropriate because no designer breed is guaranteed to possess a certain size, color, or definitive personality.

What is a Shih Poo (or Shih-Poo Dog)?

The Shih Poo dog is a combination of two purebred dogs – the Shih Tzu and the Poodle. It should be mentioned that some breeders choose to utilize one of two smaller Poodle variations – the Miniature Poodle or the Toy Poodle. This decision contributes to the eventual adult size of the designer offspring, although there generally isn’t a big difference. The Shih Tzu and Poodle both have outstanding traits that make them desirable as parents of a new, individual breed.

The Shih Poo saw its popularity sharply increase around 2005. Bred primarily because of its potential for being hypoallergenic (less prone to causing allergies in humans), this breed became a must-have for animal lovers that previously could not own a furry pet. One trend that is concerning to pet experts has to do with the idea that many breeders continually match small dogs with even smaller mates in order to achieve a teacup or toy variation of the breed. Experts warn that this can result in a fragile dog or one with health issues. Because the Shih Poo is such a new crossbreed, those who choose this type of designer pup will have what is considered an F1 or first generation offspring. Many dog experts believe that eventually there will be a sufficient number of Shih Poo to begin breeding Shih Poo to Shih Poo. This is known as an F2 breeding, and from this point, it may become possible that the current hybrid breed may become recognized as its own breed, as well as lend to a more standard idea of the traits a Shih Poo.

The Shih Tzu, also known as the lion dog, was historically a companion to the royalty of many Chinese emperors and their families. In fact, part of the Shih’s name is associated with the Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi. Surprisingly, Empress Hsi was not the initial royal owner of the breed. Dogs resembling the modern Shih Tzu have been featured in Chinese art dating back thousands of years, which leads historians to believe that this breed was popular with many royals for multiple dynasties. These dogs were called Shih-Tzu Kou, a phrase that means Lion Dog. Not only does their appearance lend to this nickname, but their innate courage also reminded owners of the big cat. Furthermore, the nickname is a nod to the Tibetan monks who supposedly originally bred and gifted the breed to Chinese emperors. (Buddha is reported to have traveled to earth riding on the back of a lion.) The Shih were so popular among royalty that palace employees were tasked with breeding and caring for the breed. It should be noted that only nobility were allowed to own the little lions and that they were given the most luxurious existence a pup could ever wish to
