About this ebook

This book addresses the most important questions of our time: Is democracy compatible with good leadership? Is democracy capable of producing good leadership?

The book answers these questions through an in-depth analysis of the concept and practice of democracy. It highlighted the fact that the mechanism of election that is basic to democracy is designed not to produce the best possible leaders, but rather to produce popular leaders, or leaders who are good at working the election system and who are great stage performers and great entertainers.

This is the fundamental democracy leadership deficit. That is why the widespread simplistic idea of democracy is leading to the uniquely modern populism movement which is now spreading like wildfires throughout the world. Yet, despite the many pseudo-democracies, there is still hope because there are still quiet happiness and free-trading bustling marketplaces in almost every country.

This book examines the various failures of democracy in various countries due to the serious leadership deficits, and explores their causes and effects. It considers what may happen in the future evolution of democracy and other political systems. Finally, it asks the question: Will there be a "paxcracy" when the power of peace trumps the power of freedom? Will peace on earth and goodwill to all men finally becomes a reality?

Chapter 1.  Democracy, A Greek Idea with Great Flaws

Democracy literally means people's rule. It was a great Greek idea from ancient Greece, but it failed in Greece and Rome, and was soon forgotten for many centuries. It was later taken up in a limited way as an elected Parliament in Medieval England after the Magna Carta of 1215 to curb the King's power. Eventually, it took roots in Europe, and then America, as the alternative to monarchy.

Today, in the 21st Century, democracy in its myriad and mutated forms is widely adopted all over the world and touted as the best political system to have evolved in human history. It is believed by many to be universal and fit for the future. The most advanced form of democracy is the Constitutional Democracy which stands on four pillars: free and fair elections, allegiance to the constitution, protection of people's rights, and the rule of law. It is supposed to be the pinnacle of all governing systems.

However, this uncritical view of democracy is seriously flawed and is a rose-tinted view of democracy. The defects of democracy that have now surfaced throughout the world in both the developed and the developing countries are varied and many. A great number of these so-called democratic countries are now struggling with the many unsavoury and seriously disabling effects of democracy on their societies. A lot other countries are using it in a very limited and diluted form.

These major defects of democracy include the election of corrupt and incompetent national leaders, the willful and persistent election frauds, the specially designed misinformation and disinformation election campaigns of the major political parties to win elections, the unabashed political manipulations by vested interest lobby groups and industries, the unrestrained and widespread toxic online social media and fake news to influence voters, the persistent hate speech and violent actions of extremist groups to undermine law and order, the special interest activist groups pushing their own agendas and biased views, the ill-informed youths obsessed with their immature and incomplete understanding of social, political and economic issues, and above all, the corrupt capitalist system of money politics, and the permanent elitist domination of politics and governments.
