About this ebook

A small town doesn't necessarily mean small opportunities for photographic material - at least until one is educated by a handy local, lifelong resident about the cold, hard truth of the area. Or maybe not.
Come along on an image laden journey through the eyes of an infidel - or at the very least, an ignorant outsider - through a small corner of what "should" be considered a boring and ordinary world, sliced from a small town settled among the sage at the margins of the great Palouse Region of Washington (the state... not D.C.... the District of Corruption... I mean, Columbia... which, now that you say it, is a little confusing, because the Columbia River is downhill from up here in Connell. And you know what they say flows downhill... thus obviously pooling down in the settling pond (cesspool) that is DC. - well, unless you're purchasing this book and happen to be born or live in Washington, DC, then, obviously *you* aren't part of that description. Obviously.)
Through this virtual, visual exploration, we'll cover: the Journey of Truth, the Five Days Before Truth, the Truth Exposed, Nothing *Is* Interesting; all before arriving at an interesting conclusion and even more impressive Epilogue provided by Brooklyn Mayson, the inspiration for this book.
Additional "bonus" sections include projects to help you explore your own humdrum world in what I would hope would be a new light through a couple projects: From My Porch and the Look & See exercises. (Don't tell anyone, but I've also slipped in some entire folders of pictures from during this trip to help the intrepid and budding visionary see the entire photographic haul from my five days where "Nothing Interesting" tried to exist. Plus a few train pictures. Gotta have train pictures.)

The short of it: over-educated, unemployed, and annoying with a camera. Quite possibly a dangerous combination. The long of it:I've been snapping pictures for over a quarter-of-a-century on equipment ranging from a Pentax k1000 to Canon SX700hs - but nothing fancier. In fact, after they retired my Kodachrome 64 film, I hung up the 'real cameras' and settled for "digital pocket snappers." It seems ninety percent of the challenge to taking pictures is to remember your camera (would seem obvious, wouldn't it? But look around at the folks with large, fancy cameras - no wonder they claim the phone-based lens will be the death of real photography). So I do my part and pack it almost everywhere.I was a latecomer to photography, though, so I had time to grow up in many different parts of the country with my formative stage in the South, but junior high and onward in the Pacific Northwest. The last set of initials after my name tacked on by the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine - making the 'highest degree attained' line of the survey read Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.I still live in the state of Washington with my lovely wife of over two decades who continues to be an invaluable accomplice. For any hazard I manage to avoid, our son does his best to ensure we'll see an early grave.Having spent a little time teaching, I've grown to miss a captive audience to inflict my photography upon, so thank you Smashwords for providing me a forum for dispersing my imagery pain to be loosed upon the world.

    Nothing Interesting - Bob Campbell

    In the beginning

    Imagine my shock... (June 11, 2019, 05:15AM)

After spending the previous hour being astounded by the incredible, jaw-dropping world erupting all around me that's a typical sunrise in Eastern Washington... (June 11, 2019, 05:12AM)

I get told the truth about this area by Brooklyn, a resident of this town: (June 11, 2019, 05:21AM)

Nothing is interesting. (Image from previous day, but taken from nearly the exact spot where this quote was dispensed: June 10, 2019, 06:14AM)

    ...

And this is that tale. (June 10, 2019, 06:17AM)

    Journey of Truth

I brought this woe upon myself. I accept responsibility for my part in the downfall of my misappropriated perception of amazing abundance of visual gold I mistakenly saw in every direction. (June 10, 2019, 05:26AM)

I not only volunteered to walk a couple country blocks over the edge of the sage on a dirt road along with Brooklyn to her dog sitting job - but told her to take her camera with her. We'd do something along the way. She happily borrowed a phone from her grandmother. (June 10, 2019, 05:48AM)

I knew there just had to be a ton of things I was missing that were cool and amazing that the locals were surely hiding from us outsiders. I figured I could trick her into divulging some of those secrets and said, Find three interesting things and take pictures on our way over.

Because she seemed to think I was crazy, I volunteered to do the same.

    .

Five feet onto the dirt road and she proudly says, There! That piece of trash, and snaps a picture. (Brooklyn's picture, approximately 06:00AM)

    (No Image)

Seven feet: Another piece of trash! and she's two-thirds done with her project. (Unfortunately this image got deleted by her grandmother who just knew this was a mistake. Nobody would want a picture of a piece of paper in the weeds.

    ...

I'm stuck marveling - and realizing I'm running way behind on the snapping of my three pictures, because it's been less than a minute and she's almost done. I shoot haphazardly onto my side of the road - into the sun and against all things photographically holy, breaking yet more rules about how you're supposed to use a camera. (June 11,
