    Dr.Abdullah Fettahoglu is graduated from Istanbul Technical University in 2003 as an M.Sc. Civil Engineer and from Yildiz Technical University in 2015 as a Ph.D. Civil Engineer respectively. He worked in academics and at construction sites as well. His primary academic papers are: "Recommended properties of elastic wearing surfaces on orthotrotropic steel decks" published by Steel and Composite Structures and "A new approach to the determination of stiffness moduli of asphalt mixtures from IDT test" published by Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering (ASCE). He writes self-learning civil engineering books, with which he aims to educate civil engineering students ready to work at construction sites, once graduated.

      CHAPTER 2: CIVIL ENGINEER

      DEFINITION OF A CIVIL ENGINEER

      A civil engineer is a person who practices civil engineering, i.e. the application of planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, and operating structures and infrastructures, while protecting the public and environmental health, as well as improving existing old structures and infrastructures (See Figure 2.1).

      Civil engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines, because it deals with constructed environment including planning, designing, and overseeing construction and maintenance of building structures, and facilities, such as roads, railroads, airports, bridges, harbors, channels, dams, irrigation projects, pipelines, power plants, and water and sewage systems. Thus, a civil engineer serves to the civilisation (See Figure 2.2).

      The term civil engineer was established by John Smeaton in 1750 to contrast engineers working on civil projects with the military engineers, who worked on armaments and defenses. Over time, various sub-disciplines of civil engineering have become recognized and much of military engineering has been absorbed by civil engineering [18].

      SPECIALIZATION OF A CIVIL ENGINEER

      Civil engineers usually practice in a particular specialty, such as construction engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, land development, transportation engineering, hydraulic engineering, and environmental engineering. Some civil engineers, particularly those working for government agencies, may practice across multiple specializations, particularly when involved in critical infrastructure development or maintenance [18] (See Figures 2.3-2.8).
