Descrição

When someone murders one of your flying reindeer, you’re supposed to do something about it.
.
So begins this whimsical Santa Noir, LAST POLE ON THE LEFT. There’s a murder at the North Pole in Christmas Town and Santa investigates down the dirty snow-covered streets, encountering drunken penguins, closed-mouth reindeer, and a crime boss Walrus. It’s all in good fun to bolster your holiday spirit, but keep it away from the kiddies. This isn’t the Santa they’re looking for. But it just might be the Santa we need.

Sobre o autor

L.A. native Jeri Westerson has been a journalist, a theology teacher, and graphic artist, among other things. As a novelist, she combined the medieval with the hard-boiled and came up with her own brand of medieval mystery she calls Medieval Noir. Her brooding protagonist, Crispin Guest, is a disgraced knight turned detective on the mean streets of fourteenth century London. Her sixth book, SHADOW OF THE ALCHEMIST, was named the Best of 2013 by Suspense Magazine. Her latest, CUP OF BLOOD has already garnered critical acclaim. Jeri’s Crispin Guest books have been nominated for a variety of industry awards, from the Agatha to the Shamus. She is president of the Southern California chapter of Mystery Writers of America and a member of several writing organizations. Jeri speaks all over the southland about medieval history, including as a guest lecturer at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana and Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. When not writing, Jeri dabbles in gourmet cooking, likes fine wines, cheap chocolate, and swoons over anything British. She herds two cats, a tortoise, a bevy of bees, and the occasional tarantula at her home in southern California. See more at JeriWesterson.com

SANTA’S BOOTS CRUNCHED in the snow. Christmas Town spread out before him with long strings of faintly glowing lights in the rising mist, and silent, frozen shopfronts. Midnight at the North Pole was like a thousand midnights before it. Were the days of dark finally getting to him? Maybe. A tumbler of hot coco awaited at home, but he just couldn’t go there. Not yet. Not when he wasn’t freakin’ jolly. Oh yeah, they expected jolly. The elves, the snowmen, the reindeer, and innumerable hangers on. Jolly. Till it hurt in a place deep down he didn’t want to think about. Jolly as fuck. Yeah, he could fake it. He’d faked it for years.

The night was a deep black, like the bottom of his empty gift sack at the end of a long Christmas Eve. There was a smattering of stars, pricking the sky in sharp detail like angry snowflakes. The rest were diminished by the shimmer of the Northern Lights off in the distance, a rippling curtain of color, raining greens and blues down on the distant snowy hills. There had been a time when he enjoyed it. Even liked to watch the undulating hues dance across a frozen sky, the strange hum that accompanied them throbbing in his chest. He wondered if he could get back to those days as he watched his scuffed boots drag through the snow.

He’d walk some more, hoping the icy cold would change his mood. It often did. Out here in the cold, he didn’t have to appear jolly to a roomful of sparkling faces, looking up at him from three feet off the floor. Lots of little people. Jesus. He hated them sometimes, and envied them even more. Now they were jolly. It was in their DNA. As freakin’ jolly as they came.

He caught movement out
