About this ebook

Police Detective Renee Brown drags herself out of a sound sleep to answer a call from the police dispatcher. She is wanted at the home of her mother's best friend, Marceil Pestkey, to save the elderly woman from a burglar. Police officer Jeff Briceson was already on scene and needed her as backup. Sounds like a routine 911 call except that Marceil Pestkey is not an elderly person to get on the bad side of, and that is exactly what happens when Renee Brown and Jeff Briceson show up to rescue her.

Oh Yeah! Watch out for Mrs. Pestkey's cat Tiger. He might be mean.

    Prologue

Hello, I'm guessing if you read the other books written about me you have a good idea that my name is Renee Brown and know all about what I do for a living. Just in case you haven't read my other stories or have a short memory, I'll tell you about me anyway. I work for a four-personnel police force in a small town called Wedgewood, Minnesota.

Crime rate is usually below average here which makes my job dull at times, but I like it that way. My boyfriend is Doctor Ross Klink, the county coroner. When the two of us have any free time at the same time we spend it together.

Since I'm the detective on the force, I usually get the day shift, making traffic stops mostly. The two officers take turns working the night shift. The police chief, Olaf Tollerton, can be found at his desk during working hours.

If the police officers come across a case like a murder investigation, a drug deal gone wrong or break-in they call me any time of night to come help them investigate.

Honestly, sometimes I think Officer Jeff Briceson, a rookie just out of the law enforcement academy, has his finger on speed dial during his whole night shift. When he's on duty, I wind up coming to his rescue most of the time. Of course, maybe I shouldn't be so quick to judge. It seems like after dark is when most of the crimes take place in our fair city.

This tale involves my mother's best friend, Mrs. Marceil Pestkey. I consider it a good day when I don't get a call from her, needing my special help. She thinks I am obligated to do her bidding immediately since she is tight with my mother.

I believe my mother, Harriet Brown, must has my number on speed dial just so she can get to me faster to complain on behalf of Marceil Pestkey.

I know for sure Officer Briceson and Mrs. Pestkey have the police dispatcher's emergency 911 phone number on speed dial. That way poor Sally has to break the news to me that I'm needed by either one of them.

When she's critical of my work, Mrs. Pestkey calls my mother first to complain and then my boss, the chief of police, Olaf Tollerton. As you can imagine, the chief doesn't want to placate Mrs. Pestkey anymore than I do. That's when he barks, Go deal with the woman and get her off my back.

If Mrs. Pestkey remains unhappy with me, I can be sure in short order, my mother will be the next one complaining in my ear.

So here is my next tale. A tale of woe for me about one of the times I clashed with Mrs. Pestkey.

    Chapter 1

The phone rang in Renee Brown's pitch black bedroom. She waved her hand around in the air, finally connected with the bedside table and fumbled for the phone. Once she made contact with her ear, she croaked, Hello.

A call has come in from an anonymous female. There has been a B and E at 542 8th Avenue, and it might still be in progress. The police dispatcher's voice relayed to Renee Brown. I've still got the woman on the line, and she is freaking out right now.

Renee raised up on her elbow, her brain still blank with sleep. She poked the button on the alarm clock to light the face and checked the time. Eleven-thirty. Sally, can't Officer Briceson handle the call by himself? I'm already in bed. It's been a long day.

Sally sighed. This wasn't the first time she'd heard Renee suggest she'd rather not go out. I mentioned that to Briceson. He said he'd rather you come with him for this call.

Renee was pretty sure Sally could hear her exaggerated sigh before she tried to stifle a yawn. I know that address. Did you ask if there is any particular reason Briceson wants my assistance other than that's Marceil Pestkey's residence?

"Boy, are you on the ball tonight or what, Renee? Guess that's why you made Detective. You hit the nail on the head. He says he and you have had dealings with her before. Since she's your mother's best friend, he wants you with him as a witness."

Renee swung her bare feet off the bed to the cold floor. Oh, yeah! Great! Don't let Briceson con you. He's more afraid of the victim than he is the burglar.

No comment. So what do I tell Officer Briceson? Sally asked brusquely.

Tell Briceson I'm on my way, Renee groaned.

It didn't take long to get across town to 8th Avenue. When Renee pulled up to the intersection that passed Mrs. Pestkey's street, Briceson in the squad car was parked at the corner with the nose of the
