About this ebook
The dream of self-publishing your story can become a nightmare if the author-publisher isn't cognizant of the steps involved in the process and the potential costs associated with each step. These steps, though few in number, can add up to many dollars being spent, possibly needlessly, to execute them. It behooves the author-publisher to know their options and know when to use each one to ensure the production of a high-quality product at a reasonable price.
The process of self-publishing a book can be daunting, yet an estimated 1,000 or more titles are published each day. To stand out, author-publishers need to know the process involved in producing and publishing their works. The author-publisher who knows the process can better control it and the associated costs.
Yes, it's possible to publish a quality ebook or print book without spending a fortune. You can learn what's required, but you have to be willing to do an honest assessment of your abilities. You'll have to decide where to invest time versus dollars.
Jo and Frank Carey have published over 130 books in six years, all available worldwide in both electronic and paperback form, and they're excited to share their methodology with you. Every author is different, and every book is different, but the steps required to publish a book are the same. If you have a story to tell, then cost should not be a deterrent.
Frank Carey
Frank Carey has been formally writing and publishing works of science fiction since late 2013. Over the years prior, he had dabbled in various forms of writing including haiku poetry, but that all changed when he and his wife, Jo, decided to try their hand at writing and self-publishing. Since then, he has written and published a collection of flash fiction and short stories, two anthologies, a pentalogy, and a trilogy. All his work, to date, has been in the science fiction genre. Most of his stories take place about two centuries in the future when Earth joins the League of Planetary Systems. Many of his protagonists are strong females. He is an inveterate pantser who believes the story will go where the story wants to go. Frank’s background includes degrees in physics and extensive work as a scientific programmer and technologist.

The Purpose of this book
We wrote this book to show you that you can write, polish, and publish a book on a tight budget. It is possible to publish a well-produced book for less than $20. "How, you may ask? Hard work. If you heard writing a book is easy, then you heard wrong, but polishing one, then publishing it is even harder, but it can be done. You just need the will and desire to do so. If you have that desire—keep reading.
Why Write a Story?
Before you go any further, you need to ask and answer a question: Why do you want to write a book? This is important because your answer will help guide you down one of many paths.
• You just want to write stories and not bother publishing them.
• You want to write and publish stories in order to share them with others.
• You want to write and publish stories to make money.
If you just want to write, then just write. When you’re finished, do something else or write another story.
If you want to write stories and share them with others, then you should edit your work before releasing it into the wild. As for releasing it, there are numerous ways to do so including on a blog site, on your own website, as a chapbook, or on a site such as Wattpad.
If you want to write and sell your work, then what follows tells how we did it—as of this writing, more than 120 times.
History
After getting married in 2002, we searched for an activity we could do together. We tried nature walks, photography, and opening a bookstore. Unfortunately, nothing took. Frank was looking for an activity that was relaxing in nature. He has trouble with stress and needed an activity that could relieve it. Jo wanted something that could be useful financially. The hobbies we tried were money pits, and ones like knitting, making jewelry, or pottery, ended up with rooms full of knick-knacks. Finally, in 2013,
