About this ebook

Her entire life was before her.

The young woman had a man who loved her. They lived in an Irish town she was happy to spend the rest of her days in. Then the fires came, followed by a knock on her door that would change everything she thought she knew about the world, herself, and her destiny.

The Rucksack Universe series combines alternate history, speculative fiction, myth, adventure, globetrotting, and intrigue—all with well-poured pints of beer. Library Journal says Anthony St. Clair's storytelling has "universe building reminiscent of Terry Pratchett," and readers say they love the Rucksack Universe's unique combination of "quirk, wit, travel, and magic."

    About the Author

Countless lives and dreams ended in The Blast. It’s not hard to imagine how our world would have been different, how many people’s lives would be different, had it not been for the endless flames that demanded new paths—and that ended the roads of so many.

    Hill Walk

No matter where they went, he walked on her right. She didn’t know how he managed to watch the carriages and the horses, the sheep and all the people, but he did. Yet he always seemed to gaze upon her at the same time.

You like to keep an eye on the world, she said as they left the village of Clifden, in western Ireland’s Connacht province, walking east toward the hills beyond. The Twelve Bens rose to their gentle height, more concerned with slowly rolling than with standing grand and tall. The October rains of 1834 had fallen on the still-green slopes, and only the bare, wrinkled rock of the wide sloped Summits glowed with a soft dark gray.

Yes, I always have an eye on the world, he replied. That’s why I frown.

She chuckled. What are you on about? I’ve never seen you frown.

Away from the eyes of the village, he took her hand and turned his face toward her. His blue eyes shone out beneath black hair. Despite the energy in his smooth, bare, unlined face, a calm beyond his eighteen years flowed like a prayer through his gaze, just as the unusually warm fall afternoon now held a whispering, slender chill.

Of course you’ve never seen me frown, he replied. The other eye I keep on you. That one makes me smile, and always wins out over whatever the world does.

She smiled back at him. Her own blue eyes twinkled under her long, straight auburn hair. After knocking away the midday rains, the afternoon sun had sent the clouds in all directions, like a king ordering messengers to every corner of the kingdom. Golden rays, gently warm in the early fall, gleamed on their creamy skin. Still, she checked that her dark-brown wool coat was fastened well over the light brown dress beneath. She trusted him. Never had reason to doubt him. But she was seventeen. She knew there was much she did not know about the world, or men, or how ladies were to be when they were with them.

It was still a risk their parents had
