About this ebook

Dana is described in one word: BOLD. Without any resources and only a BIG VISION for Uganda, she created something great of nothing for the city of Kampala. Danas unique visionary journey started on a country bus in Uganda when a fellow traveler threw an empty water bottle through the window.
In her book Dana "My visionary journey from Sweden to Uganda - Don't Think, Just do it!" She shares the purpose of storytelling as an opportunity for human contact. She includes her own successful principles for first-time entrepreneurs and others interested in entrepreneurship. Developing A New Africa (DANA) is a child and youth led organization that promotes health and environmental education in Kampala's schools. DANA's goal is to change society in order to reach an improved standard of living through health initiatives.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gordana (Dana) Simovic is the pioneer and founder of Developing A New Africa (DANA), an organisation focused on developing a clean and healthy environment through child-centered initiatives in Kampala, Uganda. She was one of the founders of Pearl of Africa Environment (PAE) from 2012 to 2015. Thereafter, she went on to establish DANA.

On one of her first travels to Africa, while sitting on a bus driving through the beautiful countryside of Uganda, a passenger threw an empty water bottle through the open window of the bus. Dana was shocked at the sight and confronted the person on how they could pollute the environment like this! The other person did not understand what Dana was so upset about and replied it was just a plastic bottle.

Having grown up in Sweden, she was taught to keep her environment clean and to preserve the nation’s precious and fragile nature. The water bottle incident triggered a thought of how she herself could contribute to developing more self and community awareness about the importance of a clean environment. Her commitment to see her desire actualised led her to the foundation of what is now known as DANA.

As a mother of three children and a proud grandmother, Dana knows the power of influence and inspiration to motivate children to do the right thing. In her personal interaction with children, she sees them as future change agents. They are curious, eager to learn and have an open mind to embrace new ideas. With an exciting life expe-1

rience of more than 50 years, Dana also knows how to get things done and to achieve tangible results. She aims DANA to bring change through educating children about the importance of growing up in a clean and healthy environment. By reducing the health problems caused by a polluted environment, children are taught to take responsi-bility for their own environment from an early age through DANA’s creative initiatives. DANA works with government ministries, schools, and the families through viable practical projects and methods towards a sustainable impact on the community.

DANA’s motto that drives all its initiatives is Let us educate the young generation today for a better tomorrow!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Dear Schools of Kampala, Uganda We met many years ago when my footsteps first walked into your school yard on a sunny warm day in 2012. Upon meeting all of you I immediately felt I had a new family from Africa. Thank you for the warm welcome at our first hello.

We partnered together to see a vision that I had for all of Africa’s children. We introduced efficient health solutions to tackle environment problems then, and today, these problems have been eradicated in school compounds to enable children to live much healthier and happier lives.

Together we have cried, laughed and motivated each other. I could not have done this without your total trust and belief in me and my dream. I would not have had the courage to continue with the health environment program.

It motivated me to continue with my dream as I travelled back and forth to Uganda in those early days. Despite the tough, and at times, impossible journey, your warm and bright smiles of comfort and encouragement allowed me to press in and press on to the goal.

We have spent many hours and days together with the wonderful DANA team in Kampala who are always there for the DANA development in your schools. As a result, the DANA spirit has made a positive impact through our meaningful activities.

They say if the heart calls, then you will surely find a way. You will always be the voice calling me back. Without you we cannot reach the vision of DANA today which is to 2

reach each child, each home, each town and each city in Uganda, Africa.

This mission impossible can now be read as I’m possible. We have proved that to ourselves as school princi-pals, teachers, administrators, students and parents. Together, we can!

Finally, we are grateful to the Ministry of Education for your warm hospitality extended to us to conduct our activities in your buildings and your continued support and appreciation of DANA’s activities in the schools in Kampala.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Dana Simovic
