Lyndon Laney was playing in a group called Band of Joy with John Bonham and Robert Plant in 1967, offering a tantalising glimpse into an alternative time-line. In our world, his destiny was to build guitar amps and a few years later album, introducing the world to the sound we know today as heavy metal. Ever since, the West Midlands amp manufacturer has been at the forefront of rock and metal, with users including George Lynch, Vinnie Moore, and of course Sabbath legend Tony Iommi. The original had an all-metal case, but the Ironheart IRT15H-2 is more conventionally built, with robust printed circuit boards inside a welded-corner steel chassis with tough corner handles. It’s a no-frills, single channel all-valve head, with digital reverb and a choice of 15-watts or 1-watt output, selected by plugging into the appropriate input jack. As well as volume, drive and EQ controls, the IRT15H-2 has master controls for dynamics and tone, together with a footswitchable preamp boost that behaves like a built-in stompbox pedal, driving the front end of the amp to add distortion and volume. Rear panel features include a series effects loop with a level/bypass switch, speaker-emulated headphones, line out jacks, and an aux in for mp3 players.
