I find Sri Lanka, along with Japan, one of the Earth’s most rewarding places to travel. The cuisine, the culture, the history and the architecture make it that ultimate mix of holiday) sits at the end of a lane off Bagatelle Road in Colombo. He originally resided in one of four tiny bungalows but then eventually purchased the remainder and over time connected and remodelled the group as one residence. There are aspects of this building that I have seen in other buildings around the world which have also left me spellbound – Sir John Soane’s own home in London and what is now The Pullman Hotel in Amsterdam. Some would ask: “Why?”. They are not architectural masterpieces – but each has this similar concept of adapting and reinterpreting a series of row houses and bringing them together to create these intoxicating woven labyrinths of variegated spaces.
