    Chapter 1: The Basics

    Die Grundlagen

Many think that learning German would be quite difficult. Luckily, they are wrong. Being a native speaker of English actually gives you a leg up. There are many similarities between the two languages. This is due in part to English actually being derived from an old West Germanic language. Our Alphabets are similar, as are our numbering systems. Not only do many German words sound similar, but are even shared between the English and German language. Many of the grammatical rules are shared as we will learn later on in this book. We will be taking it easy, and slow to introduce this new language to you to make this experience enjoyable. Lasst uns beginnen!

    The Alphabet

    Alphabet

The German alphabet comprises of the same 26 letters the English language contains, with only four additional letters. Three of these additional letters are called "Umlaute." They are ä, ö, and ü respectively. When writing the Umlaute, if you do not have the appropriate keyboard, you can write them as ae, oe, and ue. If you write a word with this in place of the Umlaute, it is widely recognized. The last letter is a symbol called "esszett", ß, and in most circumstances can also be written as ss as this is the sound it makes. The following is the full alphabet, along with the sounds the letters make, with an English word to help you understand the sound:

    A  ah as in arm

    Ä eh as in air

    B beh as in tabby

    C  tseh as in Ceaser

    D  deh as in day

    E eh as in hey

    F eff as in family

    G geh as in gold

    H  hah as in house

    I ih as in idea

    J yott as in yet

    K kah as in car

    L ell as in cold

    M emm as in man

    N enn as in noise

    O oh as in boat

    Ö oo as in
