The Beginning
H
igh upon an icy mountain cliff alone inside an empty house; echoes windy haunts blown through broken windows. Whistling past my ears while I sit dwelling within the ghostly memories of my past. Demon’s they are now to my present, haunting each passing final hour. Day by day adding painful reflections to recall a time not so long ago, tho years have passed by stealing away my very youth upon this mountain. Which once brought forth pleasure’s along with rewards anyone would simply die for.
Come with me as I take you on a journey to a time’s world in a world, where darkest of secret’s lie hidden under a cloaked mask, all for sake of family name. I give you now this, my tale to know.
Not long after my birth in the year of 1422. I was sent to live with my Aunty Katie. In a place not much bigger than in size beyond that of an old miner’s cottage; otherwise my memories of Aunty Katie really do not exist. Apart from a few scattered recollections knowing she was a single woman living upon that old run-down farm shack just outside of town. Standing upon about three furlongs of baron land without as much as a crop in many a year. Tho the shack may have been home to me once in my life but meant nothing to me in sentimental value. Nor did the property sale, sold well below worth after the time of her death when; I handled the final closure upon her life.
Taking me back to my only real memories I recall as a girl at the age of ten. Tho I was very young these earliest memories I have to share with you about my life. Come from living with my parents in the homestead built upon. What once was a lush green table top mountain spanning ten furlong’s in length deep. Set on five furlongs of table top mountain across, dropping away to another two furlong’s deep gentle rolling slope down back to a transport carriage way one furlong from front of my homestead. From the homestead extending back one furlong to a cliff-drop with a three additional furlong’s carriage way down one furlong to the side rear right side of my estate journeying down the mountain cliff face to cove dockside. From the right side of my Estate the span reached four furlongs’ to the forest leaving just one furlong across to a rocky inclined mountain face just left upon which the homestead sat. I remember the first day of my arrival home. How wonderful the fields leading up to the homestead abounded in glorious trees shaded with the changing colours reflecting the fall setting down upon us at that time. The carriage way presenting wonderfully shaped hedges magical turning into living water fountains, rolling up to the front courtyard. Dressed in arches pluming with purple and white wisteria hanging over the yellow stoned gravel path, leading round to the front door; where I was finally delivered home. Leaving what was my Aunty Katie’s way of life behind. The homestead, unlike anything I had ever dreamed. Was simply breathtaking to look at stepping down from the carriage; peering up across the double full-length verandas running around the outside of the top and bottom floors. With their well painted white rails gleaming in the sun adding to the vision of any young girl’s heaven which was now a place to be my own. As I stood taking in the wondrous vision before me at the base of those seven stairs lifting my head high enough to see the attic towering high up in the sky above me.
Out through the double white glass doors bursting open came the sounds of my mother’s high-pitched laughter with hand held by my dad standing there awaiting me to join them. That was my first introduction to the flirtatious world of high society I am able to recall. In a world which I was soon to see bought to life in a seeming wonderful playground by day turning into full of excitement by night; where all my dreams were like fantasies awaiting to be lived. With the new found friendship I made over the coming weeks and family whom would come every night to my parent’s house rejoicing in the luxury surrounds provided by the fortune my dad’s vineyard produced. Yes, this was indeed a great time to be alive. As the vine flowed filling the cups to their brim, people would dance under the sparkling shades of colourful light. Yes, I remember well how the dining hall would look at night with the crystal chandeliers reflecting colours of pinks, blues, reds and purples across the walls, floors and tables. Even now I still see the masked faces of many a guest, whom filled the great hall feasting, drinking and dancing. The costumes they adorned thou-self with only to hide their faces behinds mask of many different creatures both mythical and animal like upon the dance floor. While the band would play night after night filling the house with music in every corner of the great hall; adding a delightful companion to the sounds of laughter between the conversations of the guests, both within the great hall and out down into the front court yard. Where candle lights flicker around the wisteria arches.
Family Curse
For the six years leading up to my sixteenth birthday. There was never a dull day or a night which I can remember. Life was always full of exciting new surprises each day. Sometimes it may have only been from people I knew living on the homestead sharing a story to spark my imagination. Other times it may have been in moment of make-believe games with friends had I come to know. During my childhood years that is, until the night of my sixteenth birthday. Setting in to flow a chain of event’s bringing everything in my life to come crashing down within the few short weeks following that tragic day of fate. I remember that day if it was just my yesterday passed by. Waking to a lovely sunny morning adorning my riding clothes for a day shopping trip with just mum down in the main street of the township to buy a new dress outfit for my birthday ball that very night. You could not have imaged my joy having a day out with mum visiting the dress shops and lunch in the town’s only restaurant. For my dress I choose a lovely queen Ann style low cut breast with a double bloom bottom bell full length base. After the dress had been provided mum then took me down to the jewellers to pick up a special hand-crafted tiara. Which mum had ordered some weeks earlier unknown to me at the time, making me feel really special long before the night to come had arrived. By then the day was getting late and we had still much to do at home preparing me for the ball. My parents had planned as an extra special celebration to mark this day in my honour. Giving rise to the acceptance of my childhood passing, entering me into the young lady and rightful heiresses of the homestead to which I was born belonging too; the night was a beautiful clear night and everything seemed to be just prefect. I recall the decorations used upon that night forming a union of childhood memories mixed with coming out theme. Not only decorated within the great hall but spilling out into the front court yard turning our homestead into a magical playground. Based upon one of my favourite childhood stories; filled with fairy’s dress in pinks and blues winged suits and elves costumes done in greens and brown living in an enchanted glen made out of chestnut trees. Along with the main table presenting me seated in a special chair shaped like tree forest thorn as the enchanting lady. Leaving me to play the royal host to the many male suitors yet to call upon me that night; seeking with my dad’s permission the right to request my hand for marriage or at least a dance.
Looking back, my evening started out very well with smiles and gifts set down beside my chair from family, friends and invited guest. As the band began to play while I watch on with our guest enjoying the pre-dinner feast, till the final of guest had arrived and my dad stepped up silencing the band requesting everyone to be seated. Dad started the Ball with the first of seven toasts given by those pre chosen to speak giving the full acknowledgment upon my coming of age. Followed by the seemingly endless stream of servants filling the hall carrying in the trays laden with the most glorious display of foods, ranging from feast, chickens, fish and beef to salads pasta and rice as the main course ending with two deserts meals one made up of pavlova and the other a fruit salad topped cheesecake. With wine a plenty flowing all night long. As the meal feasting conclude to the sound of the band returning in a melody of enchanting musical notes inspiring many of the guest to once more fill the dance floor. Many of the young male suitor’s seeking to impress me with their gentleman ways began to pass by my dad’s watchful eye getting a nod or a shake of his head. Before taking a line waiting to fill my dance card for the evening; I recall how the all the young men who did line up to bring me a glass of wine that night. Soon had my head spinning around in time with the music; turning me round and round in a whirlwind
