About this ebook

Lena’s got a boulder on her shoulder. She lost her scholarships and trust in her old friends and family after she spent a year in federal prison for an underworld crime she unintentionally helped her father commit. Later, she understood that her papa might have tossed her under the bus. But he also endowed her with valuable skills. Dissatisfied with only using her talents to assist security companies, Lena decided to get revenge by stealing from three old boyfriends from the Brotherhood, the underworld organization her father also worked with. To do that, she hacked into their dark web accounts in order to siphon cryptocurrency and make illegal purchases.

Merry Men of the Dark Web - M Kay

    Part 1: The Safeword

I must have stared at the spider tacked on my apartment door for an entire minute before I realized that it had probably come from a bag of Halloween tricks. I felt marginally relieved. I figured that truly cruel or mad people would not even think to substitute a plastic spider for a real one. Still, I understood the context well enough. These spiders had trapped their fly too soon. With that message stuck on my door, I knew I had lost my last chance to flee.

As I reluctantly turned the handle, I only needed to wonder which Brotherhood member I would find inside my apartment. Whoever it was, I only hoped I could mollify him with the equipment and supplies I had stashed in my closet. I patted the flash drive in my front pocket. No matter what they took, I could reestablish everything with just the keys and software contained there. Of course, I had another copy of that flash drive stashed in a lockbox and three more uploaded to secure servers in other countries. In my business, a young lady can never play it too safe. As was obvious from my predicament, I had not played it safe enough.

Dmitri, I murmured as I spotted his broad back and dirty-blond shoulder-length hair in my little kitchen alcove. He wore neat, butt-hugging jeans and a white button-down shirt. Dmitri had always favored well-considered casual clothes.

At least I knew this guy. He had my fridge door open. Could he possibly plan to make himself a snack before he demanded some dire retribution? I strove to keep my voice level and affect an air of careless sarcasm.

Oh, please, it’s been a long time, I said. Make yourself at home.

Lena. Dmitri turned from the fridge and flashed a wry grin. Over the years, I had cursed myself a dozen times for trusting him. I had forgotten how much his broad jaw, aristocratic nose, and bristle of stubble made him look like a fantasy prince or popular movie star.

It has been a long time, he said. He held up a pair of beer bottles. Actually, I brought these with me. I wanted to keep them cold. I thought they might lubricate our conversation. I remembered that you used to like them.

I tried to look tough as I folded my arms across my chest. Dmitri outweighed me by eighty pounds and could move like a panther. I knew I had to act like I did not care. You broke into my apartment, I said.

He paused to study my face and smirked. Hello to you as well, Lena. Your hair’s a little shorter and darker. Actually, the bob becomes you, but of course, I typically prefer long hair. He paused for just a moment. Don’t worry, Lena, I didn’t damage the lock. I’m a professional.

I’m sure my apartment manager will appreciate that.

Of course he could toy with me. Nobody had to guess which one of us played the spider or the fly in this game.

Dmitri, why are you here? I asked. I dated you five years ago. We haven’t spoken since the day my father let me take the fall for him. I spent a year in prison. All of my so-called friends from those days remained silent. Like my dad, you valued your loyalty to the Brotherhood over me. You can be certain that I’ve nothing to say.

Dmitri sighed patiently. He gestured toward the sofa with one of the beer bottles. Lena, let’s relax. I agree that we haven’t spoken in far too long. Still, I think we both know there’s been some interaction, even if it’s been a little one-sided.

I did not have to guess what he wanted to talk about. At least this spider would sedate me with a dark beer before he plunged a stinger in. Out of options, I accepted the seat and the drink. He sat so close our legs touched. As I glanced down, I noticed that his muscular thighs filled out his jeans even better than I remembered.

What do you mean by an interaction? I asked. I haven’t spoken to you, Sacha, or Stefan since you abandoned me.

Dmitri spread his hands. His fingers brushed my knee. Lena, you’re smart enough to consider the big picture. The Brotherhood correctly predicted that you’d serve no more than a year. Your dad lacked your youth and innocence, and he might have gotten twenty. He already had a record. Plus the Feds were watching his activities. That’s why he needed to throw them off the track. Besides, the Brotherhood considered him one of their largest assets. I’m sorry, Lena, but some people needed to make tough choices.

I despise you, I said calmly, and then instantly regretted it. I had to remember that this was not the young Dmitri I had dated after high school but a hardened member of the Brotherhood. Perhaps my experiences made me more cynical than wise, but nobody smart ever poked a spider. So, I said after I took a long pull on the beer bottle, what are you doing here?

He shook his head as he flipped the sharp corner of my bob with his finger. "Lena, I respect you and don’t intend to play games. A user called FlyorDie hacked into one of our darknet accounts to pilfer mint-grade paper using our crypto. Besides possibly getting us watched for ordering
