About this ebook

This book is a collection of ideas I find useful for my life. Some of the ideas are direct quotes from other people, and some are my own conclusions (although I suspect that many others have thought most of those same things expressed in a different way).

Author

Mark James Wooding

Mark James Wooding began his working career as an unskilled laborer. In the opinion of those with whom he has most recently worked, the term 'unskilled' still applies. It's the 'laborer' part they question.Mr. Wooding currently lives with his family in Henrico, Virginia, and will probably continue to do so until the authorities find him.

    About the Author

    *******

    Motto

    My motto is this:

    Seek wisdom, practice kindness.

    *******

The value of a motto is that it serves as a mental compass.

When I compare my motto to what I have done, I can see if I've strayed. If I've gone off course, my motto can point the way back.

Ideally, my motto would help keep me from going off course in the first place, but that doesn't happen as often as I'd like.

    *******

To look both ways before crossing the street is not a new idea. However, lack of originality doesn't diminish the value of that idea.

Neither seeking wisdom nor practicing kindness are new ideas. They are thousands of years old. Nevertheless, I think they're still worth saying and doing.

    *******

    Many words have multiple definitions.

For example, socialism is an economic system in which the government controls what a country produces. Some people use the term to refer to a system of public welfare programs. Two people can argue about whether socialism is good or bad, and be talking about two different things without realizing it.

To minimize misunderstanding, defining key terms can be helpful.

    *******

Wisdom is the knowledge of how to best live one's life.

Some choices are wise in most places and times, such as Don’t step on the tail of an animal with large teeth.

Other strategies may apply in some environments but not in other ones. In a violent world, it might be wise to make sure you have your weapon within reach at all times. In a more peaceful world, carrying a spear, a sword or a gun with you to work might get you fired.

    *******

Kindness is love in action. It’s caring about others, and deliberately expressing that care in some way.

That expression could be a kind word, either written or spoken. It could be a facial expression, a gesture, a gift or some form of service. It could be leaving an extra roll of toilet paper in the bathroom. Or it could be a sympathetic silence.

Knowing the optimal way to express kindness in a given situation is a subset of wisdom.

    *******

The more a person focuses on being kind, the less of one's attention is available for negative thoughts, like being offended, finding fault, or anger.

The value of seeking wisdom and practicing kindness does not lie in a reward after death: they are their own rewards in this life.

    *******

    Influences

Wisdom can be found in many places. Generally, anywhere that people express or have expressed their thoughts is a potential source.

It is up to each person to decide which ideas work best for his or her own life.

    *******

Although I've been agnostic for over three decades, the Bible has been a major influence on me. Three parts of it that I like in particular are the book of Proverbs, the book of Ecclesiastes, and the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5 through 7, inclusive).

I also like some quotes from The Analects of Confucius, The Tao Te Ching, and The Dhammapada, although I am neither Confucian, Taoist nor Buddhist.

    *******

Here are some quotes from the book of Proverbs:

Reprove not an arrogant man, lest he hate you; reprove a wise man and he will love you.

The slack hand impoverishes, but the hand of the diligent enriches.
