About this ebook

Discovering the meaning and functioning of emotions has never been so simple. In this volume we review the main currents of thought regarding the psychology of human emotions. From the theories of early scholars (such as those of James and Cannon) to the most recent discoveries of psychobiology. The second part of the volume is dedicated to the issues of basic emotions, emotional intelligence and emotional development. The guide is based on a simple, fast and essential discursive style. The book ends with a small self-assessment test that allows the reader to review and fix the main concepts. Forget the thousands of pages long or prohibitively expensive psychology manuals and start exploring how your mind works through a series of guides at unbeatable prices.

    Introduction

The wide range of emotions that each one of us experiences in everyday life has only recently become the object of curiosity, study and research. Yet, emotions have always accompanied us in every important phase of our evolution.

Experiencing joy, fear, anger, sadness, surprise or a sense of expectation allows us to somatize unforeseen events and to better adapt to the changes we inevitably face.

But while it is true that these phenomena are central to our lives, it is also true that they are often not understood; in some cases we are not even able to recognize the emotions we are experiencing.

Other times we perceive feelings but we do not know whether to consider them acceptable, or we are unable to externalize them.

This guide was created to shed light on the psychology of emotions. Over the next few pages we will discover what emotions are, what scientific theories have developed about them and what usefulness they have for our psycho-physical balance.

The aim is to introduce the reader into a world that is often misunderstood, little investigated and whose importance is difficult to publicly acknowledge. Understanding emotions can help us to manage them better when we experience them, as well as to recognize them when they are expressed by others.

It is an important work of deepening because the knowledge of naive psychology commonly used is not sufficient to explain the vast phenomenology of emotions; one risks proceeding according to easy trivializations or simplifications.

This guide develops through a simple, fast and essential style of discourse and ends with a small self-assessment test. The idea is to allow the reader to review and fix the main concepts in an interactive way. In the next pages we will begin to explore the functioning of emotions starting from the approaches of the first psychological currents.
