    Full Moon - RF Cisneros

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.

I dedicate this to my mother who gave me life.

And to my wife, who always allowed my imagination the chance to run free.

I arrived at my apartment and nearly passed out; it was hard trying to unlock my door with one hand. The bullet that hit my side was still inside and was searing with pain. Look, it’s not like I’m not used to pain, hell I’m a fucking werewolf and pain is something that we’re not known for, or to be pussies about pain and shit. It’s not like this was the first time someone shot at me either, but this time it was different. The pain shot through my side, burning as being stuck with a hot poker. The pain went up my body with an awful intensity.  My heart started beating in an untimely rhythm, making my breathing heavier. I let out a growl of pain as I pulled out my phone, and speed dialed the number of the only person who could help. The phone rang once, then twice. After the third ring, a woman's voice answered.

    Hello, Dr. Medina here.

I tried my best to keep my voice calm and stable.

Uh Jen, hi, it’s me Jake. Mind coming over to check something for me?

    Sure Jake what's wrong?

    I coughed before answering.

Long story short, someone shot me, and, it's not like the other times.

She answered with panic in her voice.

Ok, I'm on my way, see you soon.

I disconnected the call and felt my senses give out while darkness fell over me like sweet oblivion.

I awoke several hours later by a mind numbing pain that came up from my wound; I blinked my eyes twice as I waited for my surroundings to come back into focus. I turned my head up and saw a familiar face; I coughed, clearing my throat before I spoke. Dr. Jennifer Medina was an old friend, or should I say an old friend we were together once, but for reasons of late that ship has passed.  She’s around five feet nothing a hundred and twenty pounds soaking wet. She has soft hazel eyes, which met mine.

Wow, you are a sight for sore eyes babe.

Dr. Medina gave me a disapproving stare while she worked like a person who’d committed the procedure to memory.

You know I’m married now right?

I smiled up at her, giving her my toothiest grin,

Why yes, Dr. Medina, I’m very much aware. Consider that last comment a freebie.

She sighed and kept on working, pushing my head back to its original position.

Look, it's real messy here I need to work and you’re not helping, so either help me or shut up.

She showed a glimpse of a slight smile as she spoke and continued her doctoring. Thirty minutes had passed as I felt more pain than I had ever felt before coming from the wounded area. I opened my eyes wide, grabbed Jenn’s arm with a vice like grip and snarled,

What the hell are you doing Jenn?

Jenn looked at me with flinching eyes as my hand squeezed her arm, I never yelled at her before, and I’ve never just reached out and hurt her before. But she had never caused so much pain before. I heard her say as my anger subsided.

I am trying to suture the wound but you shouldn’t be feeling anything. Before I started, I applied a local anesthetic. And, from what it looks like, it hasn’t started working or I didn’t use enough.

Well, it hasn’t, and my body feels like it’s fucking burning.

I let out my last comment with so much anger and pain Jenn flinched away for a moment, but gathered herself and continued.

I took deep breaths to calm myself and apologized to Jenn; she looked at me and nodded her head.

I know you’re in pain, but I have to tell you something about that bullet I pulled out, but first let me finish and get you on the couch.

I grit my teeth and kept my breathing calm, ok.

Once Jenn had finished with the sutures, she walked me to my couch and sat next to me. She was carrying a small pan with a decent-sized slug in it. She grabbed it with some forceps and showed it to me. I looked at it and blew a low whistle.

That’s what was inside me? It’s huge.

    Jenn nodded her head.

Yes, but that’s not what bothered me, I’ve taken slugs bigger than this from you before and they never did this much damage as this one did.

I raised an eyebrow to that.

What do you mean? I asked.

She took the forceps from me, opened them and released the slug into the metal pan.
