War and Peace in China: Civilized and Uncivilized Stages of Chinese History
By Terry Nettle
()
About this ebook
This book traces the long history of wars and peace in China, and the many civilized and uncivilized stages of Chinese history.
It has often been said that China has a long history of over 5,000 years. But from the most recent archaeology, it is now known that its history may be as long as 20,000 years. The full story of the history of China is comprised of three very distinct periods. These are the Legendary History, Prehistory, and Recorded History. And overlaying these three periods, there are the many great build-ups and the many disastrous break-ups of states and dynasties throughout Chinese history.
The book enumerates and describes all the key events and the many dynasties in the long history of China. It notes that if we can draw some useful lessons from the long and tortuous Chinese history, it is that wars and conflicts are inevitable, but peace can be secured with good leadership and good follower-ship. And we all need to be more compassionate and less selfish if we want more peace and less wars in the world.
The many wise teachings of Confucius from almost 2500 years ago still ring true today. This includes the most down-to earth and the most sensible advice that we should not do to others what we do not wish to be done to ourselves.

War and Peace in China - Terry Nettle
Chapter 1. The Three Historical Periods of Early China
It has often been said that China has a long history of over 5000 years. In truth, it is even much longer than that. But the full story of the history of China is comprised of three very distinct periods. These are the Legendary History, Prehistory, and Recorded History. And overlaying these three periods, there are the many great build-ups and the many disastrous break-ups of states and dynasties throughout Chinese history. These are the many civilized and uncivilized stages of Chinese history.
18000BC: Legendary History:
It is now recognized based on archaeological evidence that the ancient Chinese cultures of the legendary prehistory may extend as far back as 18000BC.
2000BC: Prehistory:
The period of Chinese Prehistory is the period of the three earliest known Chinese dynasties of Xia 夏, Shang 商, and Zhou 周. Of these earliest dynasties, the first known Chinese dynasty of Xia dynasty has been linked to the archaeological site of the Longshan culture 龙山文化 at around 3000BC. The second Chinese dynasty of the Shang dynasty can be traced back to 1600BC from the early carved Chinese words on tortoise shells and bones of that period found at the famous Yinxu archaeological site. This provided the writing tools for the period of recorded history of China to start. These are all Yellow river cultures.
1000BC: Recorded History:
Of course, the most recorded period of Chinese history started only after the invention of ink writings on wood, bamboo, silk and paper. This coincided with the Zhou and Qin dynasties from around 1000BC.
Chapter 2. Legendary History of China
The history of China before 2000BC is largely based on the accounts in the Chinese classics history books written by authors in the ensuing periods of recorded history. They have not been fully corroborated with concrete archaeological evidence. It is likely that these are more legendary than real histories. They are probably a mixture of legends, folklore and the oral traditions of the Chinese people through the ages. But there is no question that they do represent an early stage in the development of the peoples and societies in ancient China.
This Chinese legendary history is dominated by the stories of the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors
( 三皇五帝) who are well documented in many ancient scripts. They are heroic figures said to have performed many superhuman deeds, invented many useful things, and ruled as wise and benevolent sovereigns.
These Sovereigns and Emperors are known by the following names: The three Sovereigns are Fuxi, Nuwa, Shennong, 伏羲、女娲、神农 while the five Emperors are Huangdi, Zhuanxu, Diku, Tangyao, Yueshun, 黄帝、颛顼、帝喾、唐尧、虞舜.
According to some Chinese classics, Fuxi and Nuwa are the children of Huaxu 华胥 of Shaanxi, the first matriarch of the Chinese people. All the three Sovereigns and five Emperors are said to be her descendants. This
