You Can't Buck Christmas - Julia Thomas

    Introduction

On a day when the warm winds of summer were fading and fishing season was at an end the native Sami people were looking forward to the reindeer races and Christmas. Nikko emerged from his fanas boat on the Alta River in Lapland. He put on his tunic which was as yellow as the marsh marigolds. He gathered his nets and said goodbye to his fellow Sami fishermen. For in another place he is known as Father Christmas, and he and Mrs. Christmas must return to their true home.

Amongst the mist that embraces the northern most fjord of Lapland, is a portal forged by the lights. At a time when dreams were fading, and hope was needed, Father Christmas, his reindeer and the elves came to be. Every year after the leaves have fallen and forgotten beneath the snow, as the hunters search for their Christmas game, if you listen in between the wind and the Warbler you will hear the rubbing of antlers upon the Birch.

    Chapter One

Father Christmas was in a Naughty List hearing, and the elves were diligently crafting the annual gifts and toys. At a distance two bucks nobly stood atop a bluff watching some of the reindeer play a game of Puck on the frozen Spruce Lake. Tapio, the retired Top Flight team captain, is easily distinguished by a birthmark which resembles a tree marking his fawn chest. Johan is the current team captain. His superior attitude is what saw him through years of taunting, for Johan is an albino buck with a pink nose, blue eyes, but he has grey hand shaped patches on either side of his body. Tapio and Johan were discussing annual flights of the past, and this year’s team of reindeer. The bucks on the team are: Johan, Henndo, Kai, Sulo, Gusto, Joel, Unto, Olen, and Rami.

Many triumphs and tribulations were discussed; however the captains could not bring themselves to talk about the sorrow and Weltschmerzen storms (Velt-sh-merts-sin, or World Pain) they’ve witnessed on many Christmas Eves.

Tapio said, I tell you my Lieutenant Unto’s talents do not show in the classroom, but he is strong and sincere.

Yes, wise one, said Johan, he is vital to the team.

The captains stood in silence for some time as they watched Kai, Sulo, Henndo, and Joel swiftly glide on the frozen lake.

Meanwhile an eager crowd of reindeer gathered on the banks of Spruce Lake. The young reindeer waited with anticipation for the chance to play.

Their excited chatter was replaced by Ooo’s and awe’s as they watched Sulo pass the puck to Joel with a back-flip kick.

Tapio said, So much has changed over the years since I was Top Flight captain, I would have never allowed my team to play this close to Christmas.

Johan answered, Well Sir, this gives them a chance to relax. The people they see hurting one another disturbs them. Play strengthens a team. People hurting each other and the Earth make the Weltschmerzen storms worse. Knowing this upsets the team members.

A young, impressive doe, Elle, stood among
