Now You See Me, Now You Don’t - Troy Johnson

    Photography by da people.

    A seat at the table.

I thought I was in the hallway when my brother asked me. I chuckled then said,

    ‘’ yes’’.

    ––––––––

SEE, my younger brother, who is twelve, usually stays up at night. Some nights till like five in da mornin'.

So, sometimes when I forget my key in the house or leave it somewhere, I know it's a chance that I can call him and not have to wake my mother up for shit.

Don't you remember as a kid staying up late? Tryna' spit game on the phone and talk about grown stuff that. The type of stuff that you know had no business talking 'bout. Tryna' see who can stay up the longest and shit. That's what I used to think he was doing. Well, that, and just playing Fortnite with his friends.

    ––––––––

My little brother, when he had asked me if I was in the hallway, I had just come in from a long day. I was over a friend's house then I caught up with one of my niggas from school (Morehouse). It was around five//thirty in da mornin', gas was reeking on my clothes like a Shell and my eyes were red as Doritos.//

While I was walking to my apartment door, I thought I left my keys over Wan's house, but after checking my pockets, I realized that I never brought them out of the house.

I was in front of my door and called my brother. The phone rang a couple of times.

    Then,

    ''Yoooo, Open the door.''

    ‘’Huh?’’

    ‘’Open the door.’’

    ’Huh?’’

    ‘’Open the door!’’

    ’Huh?’’

    ‘’OPEN THE DOOR!’’

    ––––––––

''Oh, okay, you in the hallway?''

    ––––––––

I usually text my siblings to open the door when I'm coming in late to avoid loud knocking whenever I don't have my key. My mother hates when I do that though.

A lot of times since Quarantine started, Lyfts and Uber take more time than usual to pick up drivers. Let's say, I'll be out and ready to go home, so I'll transfer some money from my bank account to my cash app, cuz' I got my cash app card link to my Lyft/Uber, then I'll check to see which app is cheaper, then I'll text my little brother saying, ''I'M ON THE WAY!'' but delete it because spell check always wants me yelling about being on the way but then I'll text him, ''I'm on the way and open the door'', then I'll finally start typing in my home address as the drop-off spot. Most likely it'll be Lyft. They're cheaper most of the time, but then I'd click 'request a ride' and put in my pin code for my cash app card, and THEN THE FUCKING APP GOES INTO A COMA WHILE ‘’picking up a driver’’! Seriously!

It'll take a whole twenty to thirty minutes just for Lyft to pick up a driver! I swear young! Then the driver will be like seventeen minutes away, dropping off another rider off, then the ride home will take another fifteen minutes, so that's like a fifty minute travel time for somewhere that's down the street.

Knowing all that just makes me understand how the door just being unlocked for 10 minutes or 2 hours isn’t ideal buttttttt, it happens.

A small question that it may seem to be//

    But,

    ‘’you in the hallway?’’

Made me realize the lack of attention to detail when it comes to things that I often overlook because of my constant desire to stretch my mind to heights
