In the introduction part of the book, Gladwell narrated the story of Sandra Bland, a young African American woman who has been harassed and arrested by a police officer. On her way to get groceries from her university, she was asked by a cop, named Brian Encinia to pull over. Encinia asked her a few questions and informed her that she failed to signal a lane change. When Bland, lit a cigarette, that started the commotion between them. Encinia demanded that Bland should put the cigarette out and when she refused to, he insisted that she should step out of her car. It sparked a heated argument and Bland was arrested and jailed.
