    Pom-Poms! - Sarah Goldschadt

    POM PROJECTS

Maybe you made pom-poms in summer-camp craft shack, wrapping yarn ‘round your fingers till they turned purple. Or perhaps this is your first foray into fashioning these timeless, spunky little poufs. Whatever your experience, we hope you’re wowed by the 25 projects in this book. Here you’ll find subtle and super-flashy home decor, scrumptious outfit accessories, and striking party supplies and decorations. Enjoy!

    HOME

Let’s face it, pom-poms are inherently (but wonderfully) ridiculous. They serve no real purpose besides making the maker (and the wearer and admirer) grin at the handmade novelty—and, yes, the absolute cuteness—of these puffy balls of fluff. Poms deserve to be seen and loved in the place you spend your most intimate, fun times: your home. Let’s get started!

    FLOWER BOUQUET

A single pom-pom bloom can brighten a potted houseplant. A bouquet will make a mod mantel statement. Best of all, these posies won’t droop!

Floral stem wire comes precut. Use wire cutters to trim pieces to the desired length. Or, for a natural touch, use real branches for your fluffy flowers.

    supplies

5 to 13 pom-poms (thin cotton fabric, yarn, felt, or tissue paper)

    scissors

    floral stem wire

    wire cutter

    hot-glue gun

    ribbon (optional)

    1. Make as many pom-poms as desired out of fabric, yarn, felt, or tissue paper in any color using any of the methods described starting on this page. Consider choosing only two methods and three materials to keep your bouquet looking harmonious and elegant. Less is more—fewer types can create a big impact.

    2. Cut the tying strings off each pom-pom. Trim the floral stem wire to varying lengths.

    3. Dab hot glue onto the floral wire at least 0.25 inch from the end. Gently press the center of the pom around the wire, making sure it reaches the midpoint of the pom and doesn’t fall off. Repeat with each pom.

    4. Display pom-pom flowers in a vase. For a bouquet, bundle them together and wrap the stems with ribbon.

Create a matching pom-pom flower boutonnière using the steps on this page.

    QUILT DETAILS

Here’s a fun way to gussy up new or well-loved quilts. We’ve used large pom-poms for a bold look, but you can make them smaller for a more delicate effect.

    supplies

    quilt

    about 20 pom-poms

    yarn

    yarn needle

    scissors

    1. Make, purchase, or hire a crafter to make a quilt from fabric squares. (The one shown here is 40 by 48 inches and constructed of 35 8-inch squares.)

    2. Make as many poms as you’d
