EC hospitals ‘deplorable’
‘Deplorable” is the most appropriate way to describe conditions under which healthcare workers at St Patrick’s Hospital Gateway Clinic in Mbizana, Eastern Cape, are forced to work.
They use a bathroom and showers as consulting rooms and storerooms because there isn’t enough space for their requirements.
During City Press’ visit this week to the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, which has a population of just under 1 million people, clinic staff could be seen working in a bathroom with a lavatory door right behind them.
Their “office” has two mirrors, two washbasins and a hand-dryer. Opposite this bathroom, a men’s toilet is used as a storeroom for the clinic, confirmed a senior nurse.
