About this ebook

Combining a beautiful story of finding love with the wit of When Harry Met Sally, Ada Stone’s When Natalie Met Rylan captures that enduring spark of falling head over heels. Natalie has always known who she was and what she loved. Even when that meant following her favorite band on tour, alone. Sparks fly when Natalie meets a mysterious stranger, and their small talk turns deep and steamy. But when they are separated in the crowd, Natalie fears she will never see that stranger again.

When Natalie Met Rylan - Ada Stone

    Prologue

    QUEER ELDERS LIFE HISTORIES #11

Two middle-aged women sit close together on a yellow couch. One of them, tall and brown-skinned with short, kinky gray and black hair, wraps her arm around the shoulders of the shorter one, who has slightly darker skin and much longer curly hair. They look intently at the camera.

    Sam (Interviewer)

Check, check? It’s working? Okay, good. Thanks for coming all the way into Seattle to talk to me, you two. As you’ve probably read, this work is for my dissertation, and your participation means a lot.

    Natalie

We’re honored to be a part of it. Thanks for having us, Sam.

    Sam

Of course, of course. I hope you got some snacks while you were waiting, and if you need anything, just let me know and we’ll take a break. Sound good? Any final questions about the long script I read you before, or about anything else?

    Natalie and Rylan

    (both shaking their heads ‘no’)

    Sam

Right then, without further ado, let’s get down to it. I’ve found this is a good one to start with: What is the thing you love most about your partner?

    Natalie

Hmm. that’s a good question. I don’t think I could choose just one thing.

    Rylan

    Aww!

    Natalie

Well, it’s true. Let’s see… well I find it very endearing how she has to use the same fork every time she eats. We must have more than a dozen forks of slightly varying shape and sizes, and there’s only one that’s just right for her.

    Rylan

    (laughs loudly)

Since when was that a good thing? I thought it annoyed you!

    Natalie

For a while, it did. Then, I realized that’s more forks for me! (she laughs). I could go for days without washing one and you wouldn’t even notice.

    Rylan

    (shrugging)

Well, there you have it: our exciting domestic life!

    Natalie

Wait, hold on, you have to tell them what you like best about me!

    Rylan

And here I was thinking I could get off the hook… Well, you know, Natalie gets up early to cook us both fried eggs almost every morning— over medium. And, um, she’s never presented me with a broken yolk in all of our years together. Once I saw her with four eggs on her plate, and I thought hmm, must have been a rough day in the kitchen. Sure enough, all her yolks were broken. But she got it right on the fifth and sixth try!

    Natalie

    (smiling bashfully)

I may have had to run to the store more than once to restock my supply. Sometimes four eggs turns out not to be enough! But usually, I’m pretty good. I collected some data a few years ago: 46/50 intact yolks! I’m no professional cook, but you better believe I’m proud of that.

    Rylan

Saying all this out loud, I’m realizing how old and boring we sound! But we’ve had, and still have, our fair share of adventure days! Make no mistake, we can be old and boring, but that’s not the only thing we are.

    Natalie

It’s true. Though I tend to think our early days were particularly adventurous.

    Sam

Well, that seems like a great thing to talk about next. How did you two meet?

    Natalie

    (looking at Rylan)

Should I? (Rylan nods encouragingly) Okay, I’ll give it a go.

    Chapter One

Natalie bought her ticket in January. Now, it’s July. She sits outside the fenced-in area of the park, third in line for entry. Checking her watch, she notes that there’s only three more hours until the gates open and she can claim her spot in front of the stage. Good thing she is prepared for the long-haul. In a personal-sized cooler, two cans of lime-flavored sparkling water lie cradled between ice packs. There had been a third, but it’s already mostly-empty in Natalie’s hand. On top of the beverages is a hoagie sandwich filled with sliced turkey and swiss cheese with plenty of mayonnaise. The cooler and its owner are separated from the browning grass by a faded green fleece blanket with more than a few holes. It’s been Natalie’s outdoor concert blanket since she bought it four years ago. Natalie and the blanket must have been to about forty of these events in that time span.

As the sun lazily makes its way toward the tops of the westward trees, Natalie watches other fans take their place in line behind her. She both pities and envies them for not being as hopelessly obsessed with the band as she is; for (probably) not dreaming of this night for the past six months; for not feeling the inescapable urge to spend their whole day idle, yet excited, in line. In between upward glances at the still-closed gates, Natalie tries her best to focus on the N.K. Jemisin novel in her
