Jo Carey

Jo Carey grew up in the Midwest but her curiosity and gypsy-spirit has kept her on the move. She's lived in eight US states and spent three years living in Ireland. She has always loved creature movies, so creatures and bugs often show up in her books. Jo, a former information security compliance guru, writes fast-paced, character-driven stories in a variety of genres from medical thrillers to space operas and cozy mysteries. Her novels are filled with humor, romance, and sometimes creatures or aliens, or maybe even all of the above. She often builds her stories around a strong female lead character surrounded by plenty of hunky male heroes. Jo's been under fire on a golf course and climbed out the roof of an elevator in the Netherlands. Life hasn't been boring. Now residing in Texas, setting often plays a huge role in her stories. Jo was intrigued by the League of Planetary Systems, a world her husband, Frank, created for his science fiction books, and she now writes mysteries and other types of tales sets in that world. Jo was bitten by a cat, a fire ant, and a snake, before succumbing to the bite of the writing bug.

    Immortal Ladies - Jo Carey

    ARTE

    CHAPTER ONE

    Prologue

Her name was Pandora, and she was the greatest geneticist ever produced by the Olympians. She could manipulate DNA as an expert perfumer could mix scents. To her, the building blocks of life were nothing more than a palette with which she could formulate life as she wished.

Pandora made her way down the stairs into the ultimate isolation laboratory where she could perform her experiments without worrying about killing the whole planet, or so it was thought. After numerous chemical showers, she found herself naked, standing outside her lab, her studio as she liked to call it. She donned protective gear before passing through the final shower. Behind her, every door between the lab and the outside locked, allowing no one in and nothing out.

Monitor, status of growth enhancer Alpha-17-Kappa?

    Working... Sample ready to test.

    Good. Begin recording.

    Working... Ready.

This is Dr. Pandora Contos of the Olympian Confederation Food Labs. This is test one of enhancer A-17-K. Monitor, begin test.

Working... 30 CC of A-17-K has been added to 1 kg of algae Dopp-22 in the presence of normal Olympian atmosphere. Scanners show no reaction.

Hmmm. Increase carbon dioxide level 5%.

    Working... No reaction.

    What are the light levels?

Normal, natural ambient levels, visible spectrum.

Include near UV to near IR...

Working... Warning, oxygen uptake increasing 200%... 300%!

    Dammit. Emergency scram.

Scramming... Unable to comply. Containment breach in thirty seconds.

    Radiation protocol!

No effect. Self-destruct in ten seconds.

Pandora ran to the exit, but never made it. Ignoring radiation, and several other lethal protocols, A-17-K broke containment killing Pandora instantly as it ate its way out of the lab. The Pandora extinction-level event had begun.

    XXX

Herc, we must hurry, Cassiopeia yelled to her companion, Heracles, as the two of them prepared material destined for their new home.

Cassi, I'm hurrying, Herc replied as he picked up 50 stone of transport crates and placed them gently on a lift truck, its repulsor field straining under the load. When he finished, the truck would automatically take its load to a waiting drone where others would carefully pack its contents for shipment to the new home world.

A nearby door slammed open as two security officers ran in carrying a white crate with red symbols festooning its exterior. A-17-K? What the hell is that? Herc asked as he effortlessly took the box from the overtaxed guards and set it on the truck with the other crates.

Top Secret, one of the officers said. All I know is that it would warrant its own drone if we had any left.

Watch it, Herc said as Cassie threw him a crate.

    Last one! she yelled.

Ignoring the guards, Herc typed a command into the truck's control pad, causing a containment field to form around the cargo as the cart headed out of the room.

We need to go, Cassie said as she and her brother each took a guard and hustled them out of the room. Minutes later, they were on their way to the mothership as the empty building sealed itself in the hope that someday the Olympians would return home.

    XXX

The truck sped through the empty corridors, making its way to a waiting drone. Without slowing, it drove into the ship and parked in an empty space amongst a number of other trucks where it was locked and connected to the drone's power system before being put into standby.

Detecting its full complement of trucks were aboard, the drone sealed all entries and disconnected all umbilicals before launching into the sky. As it gained altitude, its external cameras recorded the encroaching wall of life as it consumed the city below.

Once clear of the planet's gravity well, the ship set course for the new home world, then activated the faster-than-light drive. Seeing that all parameters with well within operating norms, the on-board computer went into standby mode from which it would return once they were in orbit around their destination. Until then, or until an emergency awakened it, the computer would sleep while automatic monitors kept an eye on things.

    XXX

The computer woke to alarms from all over the drone. Checking the instrumentation data flows, it found the impossible had occurred. The ship was on a planet.

The computer immediately checked systems and found the drone's drive system, directional control systems, and power systems were being systematically taken off-line. Switching to an Engineering room camera, it watched in horror as members of an unknown species calmly disconnected system after system, carrying the parts outside through a hole cut in the hull.

Another alarm went off. Someone or something had breached the computer center. Switching video feeds, the computer watched in horror as a multi-tentacled creature reached up and hit the power switch for the center. That was the last thing the system saw as its power disappeared.

    XXX

Ren, where do you want me to take this? Joshua, the Alturan computer tech, asked while pointing to the drone's computer core.

    How advanced is it?

Pretty damned advanced. The gods of the multiverse were kind this time. If you want my opinion, it should go to either the research center or the hospital. The docs really need something like this to analyze the MRI data.

    Hospital it is.

Ren, a creature from a faraway universe, swam over to the breacher team working on the drone's hold. He leaned down and yelled into the ear of a squat humanoid, one from a heavy gravity planet. Sentra! How much longer? We need to get out of here before another microportal opens.

As if to answer, a section of hull fell to the ground to reveal a hold full of heavily laden trucks, their containment fields glowing.

Jackpot! Ren yelled as he clapped several appendages. He keyed his walkie-talkie, a genuine army one from Earth's World War II era. This is Ren. I need all available retrievers at my location, stat! And I need Sophocles on the double!

A swarm of retrievers arrived and began offloading the drone. Meanwhile, Sophocles showed up.

You rang, Ren? the mech asked. Soph was an octopod undercarriage carrying a quad-armed torso topped by a head festooned with sensors.

Yeah, buddy. I hope I didn't interrupt anything.

No, nothing a bottle of wine and a rare steak won't fix.

    New girlfriend?

Possibly, though this one seems immune to my charm and wit.

Well, why don't you take a gander inside the hold, Ren said with a nod.

Sophocles focused several optical sensors on the interior of the drone. He whistled. Jackpot.

    How high?

A nine on the tech scale at least. I'd have to look at the core, but by the looks of these containment fields, I would say a definite eight, possibly a nine. A truck hovered by. Hold!

It stopped next to the bot. Sophocles reached through the containment field to retrieve a box. He brought it out and held it in front of a precision scanner. Hmmm. Interesting.

    What did you find?

Ancient Earth Greek symbology, but with differences. The odd thing is it's not from Earth. The isotopes are wrong. He tapped a button on his undercarriage. This is Sophocles. I need to talk to Rhea.

One moment.... came the reply as the communications tech made connections.

    Go for Rhea.

This is Soph. How's your ancient Olympian?

If you've got one of those damn erotic urns...

He switched feeds so that she could see the crate he was scanning.

Damn. it says, 'Property of Olympian Food Research Center.' Got any more?

Soph grabbed one from the top of the truck's load and held it up.

Container A17K. Property of Dr. Pandora Contos, Lead Researcher, Olympia Food Research Center... By Hera and Zeus, this is not good.

    What's wrong?

OK, I know someone from Olympia. We need to talk to her, pronto. Get your asses and that box back here, now! I've got to make a call. Rhea out.

Ren looked at Sophocles. Need a ride?

Hardly, the bot said as it lifted off the ground, tucking its legs into flight position. I'll meet you back at the hotel. He jetted off in the direction of town.

Ren keyed his walkie-talkie. This is Ren. I'm heading back to town. Ten-spot, you're in charge. Ren out.

Ren swam into his truck and followed Sophocles.

    XXX

In town, Ren pulled up in front of the hotel. Around him, crowds of townspeople went about their business. Handing his keys to the parking attendant, he swam into the hotel and up to the front desk where a clerk directed him to a meeting room. Inside he found Sophocles, and Rhea talking to a human looking woman.

Ah, Ren. Good, Rhea said. This is Anna Korba. She's one of the survivors of the disaster that forced the Olympians to leave their home world and find a new one.

Rhea, we have people from over three thousand worlds and gods know how many time periods living here in our little universe. Then there's the billions who have moved off-world after arriving here. You can't expect me to know all their histories.

Sophocles turned a half-dozen sensors to the sky. He never reads the newsletters I send out.

Anyway, she knows about the box, Anna said.

Oh, sorry, please go on, Ren said.

The Olympians were facing famine, so they turned to Dr. Contos for a solution. She came up with a growth formula that would increase yields by 5000%. When she tested it, though, something went wrong, and the test sample quickly grew to the point where it was able to eat its way out of a 10-level containment facility. Several thousand of us were able to escape the destruction, but the planet was assumed to be destroyed.

So, what does that have to do with this box? Ren asked.

The growth formula was named Alpha-17-Kappa, or A17K.

Ren and Sophocles turned to look at the box sitting innocently on the table.

You mean that stuff is sitting in there? Sophocles asked.

    Anna nodded.

I'm from Earth, a planet that the Olympians stopped by on their way to their new home world... Rhea explained.

A planet which we culturally contaminated by playing god, Anna added.

We're fine, Rhea said while giving the other woman a hug. We have a legend about that container. We call it Pandora's Box. Supposedly, it is filled with all sorts of woes and evils, stuff that cannot be allowed to escape, ever.

Well, make sure the damn thing is locked! Ren said.

It is, Anna explained. It is locked with a one-of-a-kind atomic laser key. Any attempt to pick its lock or force the box open will result in its contents being incinerated with nuclear fire.

Oh, Sophocles said. And where's the key?

Unknown, as was the location of the box, Anna explained. It seems to have gotten lost in transit. The drone never made it to New Olympia.

Typical for this planet and universe. So, what do we do with the box? Rhea asked.

Put it in the museum, Ren suggested. Think about it. I doubt most people around here even know what Pandora's Box refers to. It'll be kept safe and people can peer at it through the security glass.

I agree, Sophocles said. It will be safe, and we can all move on. It's not like the time we found those Kraken eggs.

Rhea looked at Anna, What do you think?

I think it's a great idea. It's not like anyone can open the damn thing.

So, Pandora's Box was relegated to a secure enclosure in the museum. Meanwhile, life got back to normal.

Two subjective months later, an event occurred which changed everything.

    XXX

It was past midnight local when Brutus and his gang crept up to the back door of the Historical Museum. While the others kept watch, Brutus bypassed the alarm system before picking the ancient lock. Once inside, they made a beeline to the display section holding Pandora's Box. They gathered around the case and stared at the artifact inside. Is that it, Boss? one of Brutus's companions asked.

Yeah, that's it. That's the box Hades wants.

Kinda small, isn't it? another member of the group asked.

Yep, but the pay is the same if it's a little box or a train car. Get a move on.

In short order, the display case was breached and the box removed. Finished, the burglars made a hasty exit out of the building, then out of town in the pickup truck they had borrowed for the night.

As they passed by the sign proclaiming they were leaving the city, they could hear alarms going off behind them.

Quick, make a right here, Brutus said.

But boss, that'll take us through the forbidden zone, the first co-conspirator said.

Yeah, but it'll get us to Hades' place in half the time, unless you want to wait for the authorities. They could now hear sirens in the distance.

But people disappear out there, someone else noted.

We'll all disappear unless we get this box to Hades, Brutus pointed out. So, turn right!

They turned right and headed out of the county and into the Forbidden Zone.

See, this doesn't look too bad, Brutus said right before the truck, its occupants, and cargo were engulfed in blazing white light, leaving only the smoking lower halves of the truck's wheels to mark its passage.

Minutes later, three squad cars drove up and disgorged six deputies, one of them carried a device which he placed on the hood of his vehicle before activating it.

Morons! Didn't they think to bring a stabilizer with them? I wonder where they ended up? a deputy asked.

Probably sitting around a pool on some paradise planet, the Sheriff replied. Take pictures and grab those wheels. We can try to identify the vehicle from tread casts.

Finished with their work, the three cars headed back into town. On the way, they passed by a sign which greeted thousands of beings from hundreds of continuums upon their arrival: Welcome to Shit, the place where everything goes when it hits the fan.

    XXX

The captain of the Sentry Ship Pegasus looked up from his book when the alarm went off. Report!

Picking up several objects with multiple quantum spin signatures, ma'am, the first officer said.

    Position?

Dead ahead, distance one hundred miles, the helmsman replied.

Set intercept course and engage. Tactical, someone we're familiar with?

No, Captain, they're from here and several other places in the multiverse. It's a potpourri.

Science officer, what are we looking at?

Data coming in now, ma'am. Captain, I'm picking up five bodies, two nominally from the League while three are unknown. I'm also reading a pickup truck, weapons, and...

    And what?

A box made of crystalline adamantine. The box reads about three thousand years old, and it's from this universe.

Crystalline adamantine? That's only used to store the nastiest of the nasties. First Officer, sound general quarters. Science Officer, prepare to recover those people, their weapons, truck, and that box, then put them into temporal stasis. Communications, contact the Cube and let them know we're coming in with a hot load. Helm, once we retrieve everything and have it tucked safely away in a time bubble, set course for the Cube, best possible speed. The captain sat back and watched the screen as they came up on their targets. It never rains, but it pours, he mumbled.

    CHAPTER TWO

The crowd cheered as the last contestant ran the course of barrels. Outside the safety fencing stood some of the League's finest rodeo riders and their horses and lorses, all enraptured by the sight of Artemis, the immortal, and her mount, Pegasus, the winged horse of Olympian and Earth legend. As the crowd roared, the once ancient goddess of the people of Olympia, rode her steed around the cloverleaf course in a time which beat last-year's League record. When they finished, Pegasus reared up on his two back legs and flapped his massive wings in victory.

As the two exited the ring, a voice called out from the other side of the fence. You two know how to work the crowd. Artemis—Arte to her friends—looked down and saw her ex-husband, Bellerophon, standing off to the side holding a three-headed pug. Upon seeing the two, Pegasus leapt over the fence to land next to Bella where he leaned down to nuzzle the excited dog.

Arte quickly dismounted, then hurried over to grab the dog from her ex. What the hell did you do to my dog? she demanded.

Um, my dog, and I did nothing. The pup and I were watching a dog show when a pug was named best of show. The next thing I know, my four-hundred pound, three-headed hound of hell turned into this lap dog and nothing I say will persuade him to turn back.

Cerberus jumped into Arte's arms and licked her with all three mouths, while Pegasus sauntered over to nuzzle Bella. Hey, Big Guy, she treating you right?

Pegasus gave a big horse nod while performing small wing flaps.

You two did real good today, Bella said.

Pegasus gave him a push with his massive head.

So, what brings you to the rodeo, Arte asked while Cerberus snuggled into the crook of her arm, something he was never able to do as a hell hound.

Arte, I've never missed even one event you were entered in, even after the divorce. This is the first one that Cerberus could attend without fear of scaring everyone. As if to prove her point, a young girl, maybe ten, walked over.

Pardon me, Ms. Arte, could I pet your dog?

Arte gave Bella a quizzical look, then leaned down to give the girl access to Cerberus. She petted him a few times, then ran off yelling, He's real!

OK, that was real odd, Arte noted. You know we aren't getting back together, right?

I do, but I find it odd that you seem to have doubts, Bella said.

Pegasus gave a loud horse laugh.

Yuck it up, feather head, Arte said. You won't find bath time so funny.

Pegasus abruptly stopped laughing as he hid his face behind Bella.

Don't say that, the ex-monster slayer said as he petted the steed's long nose. You know he hates baths.

But I bet my little snookums loves his baths, doesn't he? she said to the pug. Cerberus squirmed with excitement.

The tête–à–tête between the immortal exes was interrupted by Bella's comm unit beeping. Excuse me for a moment, he said while stepping away. Meanwhile, Pegasus moved over to snuggle Arte and Cerberus.

Bella returned moments later with a confused look on his face.

    What's up? Arte asked.

One of my automated searches just had a hit. It seems the Sentry Ship Pegasus picked up an ancient Olympian artifact.

    What's so odd about that?

It was in a debris field containing an Earth pickup truck from the mid-twentieth century, several bodies, and a hazmat box. Everything had at least two quantum spin signatures—one common and the rest different. Finally, the box had ancient Olympian writing on it including the name Pandora Contos."

Pandora's Box? Wait a minute, I thought that was a myth both on Earth and on Olympia."

So did I. I also got a call from Bob. He wants us to meet him at his secret lair.

Arte rolled her eyes at the mention of Bob's man cave. You mean that glorified hamster ball the elf built him?

    Exact-a-mundo.

Fine. Keeping hold of Cerberus, she mounted Pegasus, See you there, she said as she and her two companions moved into the InterWeb, leaving Bellerophon behind.

Hey! That's my dog! Dammit, first the horse, now the dog. With fists on his hips, he moved into the InterWeb to follow his ex to Bob's place.

    XXX

Bob paced the holographic pastoral scene while he waited for his guests to arrive. Around him, the holographic forest denizens watched silently and intently.

The first to arrive was Artemis on the back of Pegasus. She hopped down to the ground and walked over to Bob while Pegasus sauntered over to join a herd of unicorns. Is that Cerberus? Bob exclaimed. What did you do to him?

Arte explained while the pup jumped into the immortal king's arms and slathered him with affection.

    Crazy dog. Where's Bellerophon?

Here, My Lord, Bella said as he walked out of the forest to join the two immortals and the dog.

Good. Did you catch the news piece about the Sentry Ship's find?

Yes, My Lord, Bella said. I thought Pandora's Box was a myth.

So did I. Remember, we left Olympia before the diaspora. I don't know about you, but I haven't reconnected with those people since their return.

Oh, you mean when they tried to destroy Earth? Artemis asked.

Yes, I mean just that. Bob thought for a moment, then waved his hand, Pandora. Ignore Earth and Olympia myths. I'm looking for historical references.

Working, a female voice replied. Pandora, Reference Dr. Pandora Contos of ancient Olympia. Born forty years prior to diaspora. Noted food scientist interested in increasing yields of various plants and animals.

Thursday, cross-reference myth of Pandora's Box with Dr. Contos.

    Working. No linkages found.

Thursday, history data banks. What caused the Olympian diaspora?

    Classified.

    Authorization Zeus-omega.

    Classified.

Well, that's interesting. Thursday, monitor Dir. Devlin's data streams, and alert me to any mention of Olympia.

    Monitoring alarms set.

You can do that? Bella asked. She is the director after all.

Yeah, I guess I'm just a stinker. Look, if memory serves, you two have a lot of Olympian friends and contacts. See if you can shake some data from those trees.

    Sure, Boss, Arte replied.

    On it, sir, Bella added.

Good, he nuzzled the dog before handing him back to Arte. He's kinda cute when he's not trying to eat your face.

As if on cue, Pegasus walked over and gave Bella a gentle nudge as Arte nuzzled Cerberus.

Arte, could you watch the furball for a few days? I've got a thing, and I hate boarding him...

Sure, I mean, of course. Babycakes is always welcome.

Great, the hero replied. He reached over and rubbed the pug's middle chin. You behave, young man. He looked up at Arte and tipped his non-existent hat before walking off into the woods.

Hmmmm, Bob noted. Arte looked around and saw the king of the gods, Pegasus, and Cerberus were all looking at her.

What? she asked, as she mounted Pegasus with pug in arm. Call me if you need anything, Dad.

He nodded as she rode off into the forest.

Kids, Bob noted as he too walked off into the forest, leaving the unicorns to wonder what the fuss was about.

    CHAPTER THREE

The Pegasus dropped into real-space just outside the Cube's outer markers. Waiting for it were four, heavily-armed patrol craft piloted by some of the Cube's finest, and coolest, pilots. The captain knew that any one of the stick jockeys flying those ships would not hesitate to drop a missile into the Pegasus' tailpipes, if he, or his crew, blinked the wrong way. Communications, open a channel, please.

    Aye, sir. Channel open.

This is Captain Toller of the SS Pegasus. IFF is squawked, authorization code psi-223-zeta.

Pegasus, this is Guardian flight leader. Squawk and ident accepted. Welcome to Cube space. Please follow us in. You have been assigned to docking bay thirteen. Over.

Copy, Guardian flight leader. Docking bay thirteen, aye. Pegasus standing by. Helm, follow our new friends, and steady as she goes. We really don't want to make our escorts nervous.

Aye, Captain, steady as she goes.

The Pegasus fell into the center of a diamond with their four escorts as the outside points. The four members of G-flight peeled off and took sentry positions upon arrival at the designated docking bay, which waited for the Pegasus with open door and glowing atmo containment force field.

Take us in nice and easy helm.

    Aye, Captain, nice and easy.

The Pegasus flew into the bay and landed at its center where a marshaller waited for them. Once down, the helmsman shut the engines down.

Engineering, this is the captain. Rig the ship for docking stations. Stern hold, open the door and wait for instructions from the Cube. Communications, signal the Cube that we await further orders.

Aye, aye, Captain. Docking control welcomes us and asks that we debark. We will be taken to debriefing. You are instructed to meet with Cube Director Devlin immediately.

Wow. OK, send my regards, and tell the Director I look forward to meeting with her.

    Aye, sir.

I hear she reads minds, the first officer noted.

Yeah, I heard that as well. Jacks, you might just get that command you wanted.

    Jacks smiled.

You have the conn, First Officer. Get the ship squared away, then take our people to be debriefed. I'll be with the director.

Aye, sir, she said to a retreating back.

    XXX

The captain made his way through the Cube's corridors to his meeting with Director Devlin. He found himself standing in front of a desk occupied by a Sokuhl male of indeterminate age. According to the nameplate, the assistant's name was Zen.

Captain John Henson of the Sentry Ship Pegasus here to see Director Devlin.

Zen looked at the captain before pressing the intercom button. Director, Captain Henson is here to see you.

Send him in, Zen, then fetch some tea, please.

The Sokuhl got up and led the captain into the Director's office. Inside, the captain found a petite, middle-aged woman standing in front of a large desk with an extended hand. Welcome to the Cube, Captain Henson.

Thank you, Director, he said as he shook her hand, noting her formidable grip.

Zen returned moments later with a tea service. After pouring tea for the two, Zen nodded to the director before walking out of the room, closing the door behind him.

So, Captain, you brought us some artifacts?

Yes, ma'am. Sensors picked up a debris field with several different quantum spin signatures. Closer examination found several bodies, an Earth pickup truck, and a crystalline storage box. Each object had two QS signatures, one of which was common, but not from here. Per protocol, we pulled everything inside and dropped the whole kit and caboodle into stasis before high-tailing it back here.

    Any sign of a portal?

None, so we have no idea how long this stuff was floating out there.

And your scanners picked up nothing else?

Scans were clear to a light-year.

You did the right thing bringing it here, Captain. You said an Earth pickup truck?

Yes, ma'am. A green, 1952 Ford F1 with inline 6-cylinder. She needs work... he stopped when he saw the look she was giving him. Sorry, I restore old vehicles in my spare time.

I see. What about the bodies?

Five total, two from League species according to their QSS, but one of them I’d never seen before. The other three are complete unknowns. Pre-stasis scans show they all died from vacuum exposure.

And the box is crystalline adamantine?

Yes, ma'am. There's writing all over the outside. It looks familiar, possibly ancient Earth Greek or Ancient Olympian. We were unable to scan the interior, so we put it in stasis as well.

Good thinking. My people are unloading the debris as we speak. Once we finish checking the pieces for radiation and explosives, we're going to move the bodies to autopsy and the artifacts to xenoarchaeology. Meanwhile, samples will be taken to determine which universes they came from.

I still can't wrap my brain around this multiverse idea.

Yeah, it's tough, but it's real. Ever meet an Alue?

Yes. In fact, we have Lt. Torna scheduled to join the ship in two weeks as our computer officer. She's Alue.

They originally came from another universe, though they now call this one home. The universe has gotten a whole lot bigger since Earth first joined the League.

    Copy that, ma'am.

Well, Captain, that covers all my questions. The last thing, though, is that I would like to ask you and your first officer to join my husband and I for dinner tonight.

    We would be honored, Director.

Good. Stop by Zen's desk and leave him your contact information. He'll call you with the details. We're looking at 1900 hours.

Excellent, the captain said as he stood up and shook the director's hand. After giving Zen his comm number, the captain called his first officer to tell her the good news before heading back to rejoin his crew.

Losira Irithyl, MD and Warrior Elf Queen of Ventos Prime, stared at the five bodies as they lay under the bright exam lights of the Cube's state-of-the-art morgue. While she looked and thought, her tail performed corkscrew motions behind her back as it conveyed her conflicting emotions.

Doctor, please, Dr. Smith, the lead Alturan pathologist pleaded while her eye stalks attempted to avoid the crazed appendage. You're going to poke one of my eyes out.

Losira looked first at the pathologist, then the tail before taking it in hand and tucking it into a pocket. Sorry.

Not a problem. So, what do you think?

According to the QSS scans, these three are definitely not from this universe, Losira noted while pointing to three bodies—one serpentine, one biped, and the third multi-limbed. These two, though are from this universe. This one is human while this one...

Certainly isn't, the Alturan said while pointing to a body with a massive neck holding a head with two trunks emerging from where it's nose should be. Now, don't get me wrong, I've only had members from most of the League species on my tables, but I have never seen or heard of anything like this.

Losira nodded. I'm with you there. Which one do you want to open up first?

The elephant man. I have to see how that neck works.

    CHAPTER FOUR

Ciara made her way through the heart of the Cube. Around her, thousands of Cube scientists, engineers, and staff went about the day-to-day business of keeping the citizens of the League safe from threats external, internal, and everything in-between.

Surrounded by a dozen prep labs was the League's finest xenoarchaeological examination laboratory. Designed with the help of some of the League's most noted scholars, the lab employed analytical equipment not found anywhere else to determine the nature and origin of artifacts brought to the cube from the six points of the celestial compass.

Ciara walked into the lab and found her two scholars, Dr. Nebulon Blyst-Thurgood and Dr. Tannith Aymar-Scott staring at a 1952 Ford F1 pickup truck while Capt. John Henson worked on something under the vehicle's hood. Ciara walked over to where Nebulon sat perched on the back of a wooden chair, itself another artifact brought in for examination, but now serving as a piece of furniture for the lab.

Hey, Nebs, how's the search for enlightenment going?

Not well. So far, we've only got more questions and few answers.

Damnedest thing, Tannith said while bringing over a cup of tea for the director.

Thanks, Ciara said as she took the cup. Why's Capt. Henson inside the conveyance?

He's familiar with the old technology having rebuilt several vehicles from the time period. He insisted on helping.

So, what's the problem? Ciara asked.

This, John said as he pulled a glowing sphere from inside the truck and placed it in a cradle on a worktable. It was about the size of a bowling ball, and it emitted a rainbow of bright light.

What is it, and what's it doing inside what I assume is the engine compartment?

John shrugged. The lab door opened followed by a Katalan woman wearing an SS Pegasus uniform hurrying in. Is this it, Captain?

Yep. Commander Margie Sinto, this is Dr. Nebulon Blyst, Dr. Tannith Aymar, and Cube Director Ciara Devlin. Ladies, this is Commander Margie Sinto, the Pegasus' engineer and a fellow gearhead.

Ma'ams, she said while circling the sphere. Meanwhile, John went back to the truck.

Any idea what this is, Commander?

Margie grabbed a scanner off the table and aimed it at the sphere. She whistled as she read the results of the preliminary scans.

    What did you find?

The sphere is emitting the energy equivalent of 1000 brake horsepower. The reason we're not being cooked is the sphere is encased in a force field. I've never seen anything like this. The captain walked over holding a ring-shaped tube with cables sticking out from various points on its circumference. he placed the ring around the sphere, then attached a voltmeter to two of the cables. The meter read 12VDC. He shifted the meter leads to a pair of thicker wires. 300VAC, he reported.

How the hell... Margie whispered as she ran the scanner over the ring.

What am I looking at? Ciara asked.

A 1952 Ford F1 pickup truck powered by an energy source far more advanced than anything we can produce, Tannith said.

Any idea how old the energy supply is?

Nebs jumped down off her perch. Thinking we might have another Erdexi situation?

Ancient devices far more advanced than what we currently have in the League? Yeah, the thought has crossed my mind. You got something?

Maybe. She walked over to a cabinet and took out an instrument. Some of the boffins down in Science Section figured out a way of determining the age of a manufactured object by comparing ratios of certain isotopes which get set during most normal manufacturing processes. The converter ring looks like it was manufactured, so this might work... Nebs aimed the device at the ring. What the hell? She changed a setting and tried it again. After reading the device, she put it back down and returned to her perch.

So? What did you find? Ciara asked.

It was manufactured about a thousand years from now.

Well, that's not so bad... Ciara started to say.

A thousand years in the future.

No one moved or spoke. Finally, Henson asked. Time travel?

Ciara looked at the glowing sphere sitting on the table. I need to consult with an expert. Keep me posted. She took Nebulon's device and walked out of the lab.

    CHAPTER FIVE

Since coming out as an Immortal, Bob—Zeus in a previous life—had moved his satellite to a docking port on the Cube. It was here that he hung his hat when he was in the neighborhood.

Ciara walked up to the ornate wooden door and glared at it. Damn nonsense, she muttered before knocking.

The door swung open to reveal Bob in all his glory, his arms raised in anticipation of a hug for the director. Ciara! So good to see you! he said while embracing her.

    She tolerated it.

Finally, he released her. I was delighted to get your message. How can I help you? he asked while leading her inside. She found herself in a spacious den decorated as a British club complete with bar, wood paneling, and heads mounted on the walls. The furniture was made up of overstuffed leather chairs and sofas. He walked over to the bar and poured two drinks while she walked around the room.

I love what you did with the place. What did you do with the hamster ball?

Through that door in the back wall. This living room only spans a small portion of the space the station offers.

She stopped beneath a towel covered mounted head. she could see several snakes coming out from underneath the cover. She gave Bob a quizzical look as he walked up with two glasses of tea. Oh, that old thing, a memento of days long past. He handed her a drink.

Bob, we found some odd debris, and I need to run some data past an expert in temporal mechanics. You know anyone?

Maybe. Can I see the data?

She handed him a datapad and the device Nebulon used to determine the age of the sphere. He took the devices from her and perused them. OK, this is beyond me, but I know someone...

A wall panel slid into the ceiling to reveal a view screen. As Ciara watched, a rotating LeagueComm logo appeared followed by the image of a middle-aged
