WHEN it comes to renovating a house, sometimes it’s not what you know, it’s who. If it takes a village to raise a child, it can take a small army of friends and relatives to help you tackle the daunting list of makeover tasks, happy to bring experience and, ideally, the right tools.

When I bought my first house, I paid work mates in takeaways to help me strip walls, assemble wardrobes and fit my kitchen, only hiring tradespeople to tackle the electrics and plumbing. With my second, a total renovation of a period property, I have upped my bribes to meals out in return for assistance in doing as much prep work as we could before calling in the professionals.
