      There was a song in his head. You know how that goes. Just seconds before it began playing on the car radio, it was running in the back corners of his mind. The lyrics to that classic rock tune. Don’t you just love when that happens? It makes you feel like you’re living a charmed life. At least on the outside. So for a very little while—the next few minutes, anyway—you’re calling the shots. You’re in sync with the universe. At one with something greater than yourself. The greater good, if you will. Or whatever you want to call it. After all, it’s something that doesn’t happen very often. You might as well enjoy the moment before your three are up. ’Cause one thing’s for sure. You know this hiccup minute isn’t going to last.

      No one knows what it’s like to be the bad man / To be the sad man / Behind blue eyes / No one knows what it’s like to be hated / To be fated / To telling only lies

      It was The Who. Right? Of course, it was. Just like he was Aaron, a good-looking, twenty-something. Whatever that meant. A Southern charmer to be sure, with perfectly shaped dark eyebrows. Chiselled jaw. Symmetrical cheekbones that made him one of the pretty people, or so they said. Dirty blond hair and an even darker sense of humour. Hair stubble on his face from a day’s growth. Driving.

      But my dreams, they aren’t as empty as my conscience seems to be / I have hours, only lonely
