    Chapter 7

Haley's residence. In the pool, men were swimming. Drinking. Some were wrestling. Among them, Peter Proud, Big Dan, Frederico, and an assortment of other young gay men. Some more obvious than others.

Etienne pulled himself out of the pool. Haphazardly drying himself. He headed to the main house. He wore a stylish European swimsuit. It accentuated his shape perfectly. It wasn't garish like those thong bikinis so many men Haley's age wore. Flauntingly.

It was a sublime afternoon. One of those days you can't help but look back on in fond bliss. A perfect Fourth of July.

Haley was grinding. Ice in the blender. Wearing a giant sun hat. Silk leopard shirt. Looking more like a queen than a buttoned-down scientist. Thankfully not sporting a thong or a bikini. A photo of Lane behind him. Hanging from an elephant magnet off the fridge.

The doorbell rang as Etienne passed by.
Over the grinding. Can you get that for me, Luv? Haley asked.

Etienne paused at the bathroom. Turning back to the front door. He opened it to find Aaron. Standing on the other side. Aaron pulled off his Chanel sunglasses. Getting a look at Etienne. Dripping wet. Aaron smiled his wicked grin. He checked out Etienne's trunks.

Well, hello, there. What do we have here?

    Bonjour, replied Etienne.

And he's French? Aaron grinned bigger.

    Tu parles français? Etienne asked.

Oui, replied Aaron coyly. He smiled again. Un peu.

Etienne smiled, mocking. Oh, your French is very good.

    I know, Aaron boasted.

Haley walked up with a blender full of Piña Coladas.

Aaron Sumner, at long last. We were beginning to wonder if you were ever going to show?

You know how I love to be fashionably late, Aaron chimed.

Of course. Always making an entrance, Haley continued.

Are you a regular? Etienne questioned.

Of course. I wouldn't miss it for the world. Aaron took another look at Etienne. As if to reply directly to his question with a you-can't-be-serious look. But you? You're new. He smiled. I know I woulda remembered a face like yours from last year.

Etienne laughed modestly. Yes, I arrived late. Just in time for Bastille Day, I'm afraid.

    Aaron laughed. Is Lane here?

Haley shook his head. Overdue, sad to say.

Really? Still in Africa? Aaron was surprised.

Haley nodded. May I present my protégé.

Your protégé? Another surprise. Aaron wasn't quite sure how to take that.

You no doubt summarised he's French. Haley smiled. All the way from Quebec City. He knew where Aaron's leanings lay.

A French Canadien? And another NIH flunkey? Charming.
