    In grand style. A Cotillion was in progress. There were socialites dripping in jewels. Wearing their long traditional gowns. Ruffles draping across marble and travertine. No synthetic diamonds made in modern labs were to be found. Here. There was only room for the genuine article. A twenty-piece orchestra playing Mercer and Mancini's ‘Moon River’. Kept in time. Its baton-wielding conductor, hair pressed tight and slick across his skull with all the grease he could muster. His big teeth shined brightly back, acknowledging the dancing couples. His mouth forming a wide-open smile. Curling up his thin Clark Gable moustache around the corners. Southern gentlemen in pressed white tuxedos and dark pants dotted the landscape like inside-out penguins. Fresh-faced cadets, wearing Confederate grey in Citadel military uniforms. Full of hope and promise of the night. Marched. Rounding out the ballroom.

    A hand lifted a champagne cocktail off a passing servant's silver tray. The hand belonged to an emblazoned cuff. Denoting rank and insignia of none other than the surgeon general of the United States. His name was CW Waykins, an elder Southern statesman. Retreating hair. He barely had time to touch the champagne to his lips.

    Senator! Senator, he shouted fondly across the room. There you are. Now, where is your lovely wife? And why do I get the feeling you've been avoiding me?

    Why CW, CW, that's precisely because I have, the aristocratic Southern statesman stated flatly. As he had been known to do. His name was Senator. As fate would have it. Or a pile of old money, combined with precious downtown real estate, made him. Other than a very wealthy man. Indeed. He was in fact also a senator on the Hill, no less. You haven't seen my beautiful wife?

    Waykins was shaking his head.

    Senator continued. Sipping on his Wild Turkey. "What did you do? Come in through the back
