    In the darkness.

The Who's ‘Behind Blue Eyes’ was playing.

No one knows what it’s like to be the bad man / To be the sad man / Behind blue eyes /

There in black in the back corners of your own mind. A photo of Aaron could be seen. Moving forward, taking shape. Clearly filling your mind’s eye. It was. It was taken at the Independence Day party.

No one knows what it's like to be hated / To be fated / To telling only lies.

Now you can see. More photos followed. Images of events. Gay Pride.

But my dreams, they aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be / I have hours, only lonely.

Now you are watching television. Images flickering past. The History Channel. The Gay Rights movement. Commencing with Stonewall. The images moving faster.

My love is vengeance that's never free / No one knows what it's like to feel these feelings / Like I do / And I blame you.

You can see churches now. Almost smell the newly cut green grass. Yes, it was recently mowed. Congregations. Can't you almost smell the starch in pressed white shirts tinged with the stench of bleach? Hair cropped too short. It prickles the back of their red, raw heads. A marine cut. It makes you itch. Dark horn-rimmed glasses you see, like their silly lost ties from a bygone time. Steeples. Pressing heavenward. Evangelicals reaching with palms raised, obedient. You giggle. They remind you of Nazis, don't they? Now, look at an ageing, Parkinson-ridden Pope John Paul II. His body failing him. Sagging away into a useless mound of flesh.

In your head, photos of Daisy, Macon, Genleem all approach and pass by. Characters in our own little drama unfolding. President Blake and a congress. You see a flash of the former things. Another president. Another congress. Speaking emphatically. Gesticulating. Like? Hitler, yes, you see a flash of the past. Of things done. Undone. But unfinished. They gather round now. Was it a signing ceremony in the rose garden? 'DOMA.' For those of you asleep in Hetero World, that's in the Defence of Marriage Act. Shhh, don't wake. Don't ask, don't tell.

No one bites back as hard on their anger / None of my pain and woe / Can show through.

There was a photo of Etienne. Taken from the Independence Day party.

But my dreams, they aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be.

    An image of Haley.
