    GETTING THE MESSAGE

    Before reading the text, use the title and illustrations to help you predict the subject, content and meanings. Ask yourself what you know about the topic. Read the whole text and skim to get the main idea and then read again more slowly. Identify cognate words. When you look for a specific piece of information, scan. Look for proper names, dates, numbers, words in quotation marks, etc. If you dont know a word, use clues to help you understand: the kind of word it is, the topic, the ideas you expect.
