My Mommy School Philosophy

Mommy School is all about constructive fun with developmentally appropriate learning!
My philosophy is that toddlers learn through experiences. I believe that toddlers learn by seeing and doing, so Mommy School is intended to be action-based. I believe that most 2- and 3-year-olds are not yet ready for pencil/paper activities simply because they dont learn this way! My hope is to provide you with a few tools to help guide your toddlers learning. For me, the most exciting part about teaching my toddler is seeing the world through his eyes. He is starting to understand the world for the very first time! Because this is the first time that our toddlers are exposed to many concepts, please dont expect your toddler to catch on immediately. It can be difficult at times to gage your own success because toddlers cant always communicate exactly what they are learning. You will see their progress later on as they continue to build connections to the world around them! I compile a variety of activities in my Mommy School units, but I dont expect to do them all. Allow your child to experience letters, numbers, colors, shapes, and other thematic elements in their own unique way. You will quickly see that your child thrives with some learning methods and not others. Pick and choose activities that work best for you and your child. I am trained as an Early Childhood Educator, and I taught First Grade for 4 years. However, I am building my Mommy School units from a mothers perspective. I am a Mom first, and a Teacher second. Remember that I have searched the web high and low seeking the very best toddler activities. I am not the genius behind all of themI simply gather them all in one place. ACTIVITIES & GAMES

Snowman Mystery Bag Invite your child to take out items from a mystery bag. Include items such as: Carrot nose Button Top hat Broom Ice (real or some sort of clear rock) Ask your child to guess what these items area melted snowman! This would be a fun introduction to your winter unit! Snow Globe Sensory Tub Create a sensory tub using fake snow (you could also use shredded paper or packing peanuts). To create snow globes, hot glue plastic figurines inside the lids of different sized jars (baby food jars, plastic jars, pickle jars, etc.) Some other ideas for a snow sensory tub include: White or clear beads Clear and white lids White pompoms Polar bears Silver plastic ornaments Silver garland Mini snowmen and penguins Cotton balls Mini snowflakes and white Pinecones stars
Mitten ABC Page Call out a letter of the alphabet for your child using the attached mitten page. Ask child to circle the letter with a dry erase marker when they find it. Erase and start over! Indoor Snow Create your own indoor snow by filling a turkey roaster pan with cotton batting or cotton balls. Encourage child to use mittens to play in the snow! You could also use shovels or kitchen utensils to mix up the snow! Marshmallow Igloos Build igloos out of marshmallows! Snow Activities Bundle up and play outside in the snow! You may consider some of these activities: Build a snowman or snow animal. Build an igloo, snow tunnel, or snow cave. Take a spray bottle filled with colored water and make snow art by spraying them in the snow! Go sledding. Use the same tools you would use for sand castles to build snow castles. Press cookie cutters in the snow to make shapes. Use letter cookie cutters to write a message in the snow. Catch snowflakes on black paper or black felt and examine them inside with a magnifying glass. If its very cold outside, blow bubbles! Bubbles wont pop if its in negative temperatures. Snow Tracks Use a variety of objects (cars, spoons, shoes, etc.) to make tracks in the snow. Encourage child to follow the sets of tracks and play a guessing game to determine what made each set of tracks. Winter Walk Go on a winter walk around the neighborhood together. Talk about the changes you see in nature. Use the attached winter scavenger hunt to help your child explore the outdoors.
Hide the Mitten Instead of hiding a thimble, play hide the mitten! Ice Cube Races Color water different colors before freezing it in ice cube trays. Once frozen, race the ice cubes down a ramp. Snow Words Write words in glue on blue construction paper. (You could also write the words in sharpie and ask child to trace the words in glue for extra practice.) Sprinkle the glue with fake snow. You could also use sugar or white/silver glitter. Let glue dry. This would be really fun to do with your childs name or sight words. Shaving Cream Snow Spread out shaving cream across a table or desk. Encourage children to write letters or numbers in shaving cream snow. Snowman Sequence Use the attached snowman sequencing cards. Look at the pictures and determine what happened first, second, third, and fourth! Ice Cube Game Play hot potato with an ice cube! The person left holding the ice cube when the music stops, is out! You can sing this song as you go: Pass the Ice Cube (Tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat) Pass, pass, pass the ice cube Pass it very fast. Pass, pass, pass, pass How long will it last? Box Snowman Create an indoor snowman using boxes! Cover a small, medium, and large box with white paper. Stack them according to size with the little one being the head. Add eyes, nose, mouth, arms, hat, and buttons.
Mitten Match Collect all of the mittens and gloves you can find. Hide each mitten/glove around the room, and challenge your child to find matching pairs of mittens! Sing this song as you are searching for pairs: Tune: If Youre Happy and You Know It Each mitten has a mate, has a mate. Each mitten has a mate, has a mate. Can (childs name) find the pair? (He/She) is looking here and there. Can (childs name) find the mate, Find the mate? Creative Writing Complete the attached creative writing sheet by completing the sentence: My mitten is so big a _______ could fit inside. Help child to draw a picture of their mitten! This would make a fun class book! Snowmen Names Create a snowman by spelling out your name! Write one letter of childs name on paper plates. Stack on top of each other. Decorate a snowman head for the top circle. Add a hat or any other embellishments as desired!

Winter PreWriting Use the attached pre-writing sheet to help your child trace the paths to match the scarves to the hats. Indoor Snowball Fight Have an indoor snowball fight using socks or large marshmallows or cotton balls! Alternatively, you could have a snowball fight by writing ABCs on white pieces of paper. Crumple them up and throw them around for a while. Invite children to stop throwing and identify the letter on his/her paper! Winter Pre-Writing Use the attached winter pre-writing to practice handwriting skills by tracing the path from the scarf to the winter hat!
ARTS & CRAFTS

Snowflakes Fold coffee filters and cut interesting shapes to create snowflakes! You could also try folding paper into triangles and using a hole punch to create interesting shapes and patterns as an alternative to scissors. Fluffy Snowman Cut out a snowman shape out of white construction paper. Add eyes, nose, arms, and hat using other construction paper. Glue cotton balls all over the snowmans body. Add buttons if desired.

Marshmallow Snowflake/Snowman Draw a snowflake shape with glue on a blue piece of construction paper. Ask child to use miniature marshmallows to cover the glue outline. Add glitter to your snowflake picture if desired! You could use the same method to create a snowman. Snowman Art Collage Create a snowman using a small paper doily, medium, and large. Layer them together on construction paper. Decorate using a variety of materials including pompoms, tissue paper, wiggly eyes, buttons, etc.
Epsom Salt Snowflakes Cut out a snowflake shape out of paper. Paint with a thick mixture of Epsom salt and water. This will look crystallizedlike a real snowflake! Doily Snowflake Place a doily on a paper plate. Use a sponge to sponge-paint over the doily with blue paint. After covering the whole plate, remove the doily to see the snowflake design. Q-Tip Snowflake Give child small circle cut from wax paper. Have them glue on Q-tips in the rough shape of a snowflake, with all touching in a middle puddle of glue. Sprinkle glitter on the snowflake and then let it dry for a couple of days. You can even peel it from the paper and you have a snowflake! Jell-O Art Give child an ice cube. Sprinkle Kool-Aid or Jell-O on the childs paper. (You could also use powdered Tempera Paint.) Let them use a Popsicile stick to push the powder around to create a colorful design! Snowflake Painting Use painters tape to create a snowflake shape on canvas board as shown below. Then invite child to paint on top of the snowflake stencil. Peel paint off, and you have a lovely snowflake painting!

Mitten Handprint Trace childs hand with fingers close together and thumb spread apart to create a mitten shape. Trace in sharpie and cut out. Allow child to decorate any way he/she chooses! Add cotton balls along the bottom of the mittens outline. Snow Paint Create snow paint by mixing equal parts of white glue and shaving cream. Smear over snowflake or snowman shapes. You could also use the snow paint to create a snowman. Add construction paper eyes, nose, mouth, scarf, and hat if desired.

Glittering Snowball Blow up a small balloon. Dip yarn pieces into a mixture of glue and water. Then have them put the yarn all over the balloon until it is covered. Pour glitter over the balloon and let it dry. When dry, you can pop the balloon and remove. Snowman Balloon Prints Blow up a balloon. Let child roll in paint and press onto paper to create a snowman. Once dry, draw on face, hat, and arms.
Towel Paper Roll Snowman Paint a toilet paper roll white. Add eyes and a nose. Decorate with yarn to create a scarf. A baby sock would make a cute hat!

Mitten Prints Use outgrown mittens to create mitten prints in paint! Have child place hands in mittens and press in paint and then onto paper. Add glitter if desired. Bubble Wrap Snowman Cut out 1 small circle from bubble wrap, 1 medium circle, and 1 large circle. Press onto white paint and then press onto black construction paper. This will look like a snowman made from snowballs! Glittery Snowflakes Cut a green pepper in half crosswise. Dip in white paint and press down onto dark-colored construction paper. Add glitter or embossing glitter for texture before the paint dries.
SCIENCE
Sticky Ice Place a piece of ice in a bowl of water. (Should float on top.) Give your child a string and have them try to pick up the ice. They will not be able to do this. Then help them lay the string gently across the ice and put salt over the ice cube. Slowly count to 10 and the ice will stick to the string! Sparkle Soap Mud Have a sensory play experience by making sparkle soap mud! This will create a soft, foamy goop that will leave your child feeling clean! Grate 3 bars of solid soap into shavings. Tear up a toilet paper roll into tiny pieces. Mix together in a large tub. Pour 2 jugs of very warm water (warm enough to melt the soap shavings) and mix it all together with your hands! If it is too wet, add more ripped toilet paper. If it is too pasty, then add more water. Add some glitter if desired! You can use a potato masher or a wire whisk to make a pulpy, bubbly, smooth mush. Ice Rainbows Crush up some ice and place in a small tub or container. Drop water colored with food coloring and watch the colors travel down the ice pieces and blend in with the other colors. Freezing Water Experiment Experiment with freezing different sized containers of water outside. Which container will freeze the fastest? Make a prediction and then see if youre right! Save Your Snowflakes Now you can bring your snow inside! Freeze a piece of glass and a hairspray can (aerosol) overnight. Spray the chilled glass with the chilled hairspray. Go outside and let some snowflakes settle on the glass. When you have enough flakes, bring glass inside. Allow it to thaw at room temperature for 15 minutes. Now you will have a permanent record of your snowflakes!
Snowball Predictions Invite each child to place a snowball in a Ziplock baggie and predict what will happen. Predict how long it will take for the snowballs to melt. For extra fun, place snowballs in different areas of the house to see what happens.
MATH
Mitten Math Use the attached Mitten Math worksheet to count the mittens inside each box. Snowman Button Match Use the attached snowmen to match buttons according to the numbers on the snowmens hats. Roll a Snowman Play the attached Roll a Snowman Game. Roll a dice and count the dots to create a snowman. Snowball Catch Write numbers in the bottom of each section of an empty egg carton. Have each child put 1 snowball (cotton ball) in the egg carton. Close the cover and shake it. Then open it up and see which number it landed in. Then ask child to count out that many snowballs. Snowman Bowling Go snowman bowling! Wrap 10 water bottles with white paper. Draw a snowman face at the top of each one. Go bowling with a small ball. Each time you bowl, count the pins that were knocked down. Mitten Measurement Create a large mitten using a poster board, cardboard, or large piece of construction paper! Measure how long the mitten is using a variety of different household objects: Unifix cubes Paperclips Pencils Pennies, etc.
Puzzles Put together the attached mitten puzzle and the snowman number puzzle. Snowman Size Discrimination Complete the attached snowman size discrimination activity by placing snowmen in order by sizes. LITERATURE CONNECTIONS
Snowmen At Night After reading the story, create your own Snowmen at Night portrait. Do a chalk drawing on black construction paper. Create a scene of snowmen encourage child to draw what he/she thinks the snowmen really do at night! Froggy Gets Dressed After reading Froggy Gets Dressed, set up a dramatic play area with coats, boots, mittens, scarves, gloves, etc. Take pictures of each child/family member dressed up in their winter clothes. Create a small book using your pictures.
MAGICAL MITTEN DAY

Have a Magical Mitten Day where all of the activities are focused on the story The Mitten. Ask your child wear his/her mittens all day! Consider some of the following activities: Gather animal figurines and create a HUGE mitten out of paper. Have child choose an animal and decide on an action word that would describe how they come into the mitten. (The cat crawled in; the rhino ran it, etc.) Cut 2 pieces of felt in the shape of a mitten. Put Velcro around the sides and leave the top open. Count how many plastic animals fit inside the mitten before the mitten bursts open. Lace up paper mittens! Create a mitten snack. Cut pita bread into halves. Spread marshmallow crme inside, and sprinkle coconut as snow on the top. Place animal crackers into the pocket. Eat and enjoy! Act out math problems using plastic animals and your mitten! (For example, put in 2 tigers and 1 elephant. How many animals are inside your mitten now?) FINE MOTOR SKILLS

Snowman Lacing Draw a snowman face on a white paper plate. Punch holes all the way around the border of the paper plate. Help child lace around the snowman face using yarn or a shoelace!
GROSS MOTOR SKILLS

Ice Skating Demonstrate how to ice skate using paper plates on your feet. Place a paper plate under each foot. Move around by sliding feet along as though you are ice skating! You could also play a freeze game where you start and stop skating to music. Snow Ball Target Practice Create some targets using paper plates. You can make these as basic as you wish or decorate them with snowmen, etc. Hang from the ceiling by punching a hole and hanging with string at different heights. Make snowballs using packing peanuts or marshmallows and wrapping them up in ziplock baggies. (You may want to secure them with packaging tape.) Have snowball target practice! Help child aim for different targets and practice throwing.
Snowball on a Spoon Give child a Styrofoam ball (or pingpong ball) to carry on a large spoon. Roll into powdered sugar. (Makes about 14 balls). Snowman Soup Drink snowman soup! Use the attached poem to recite while you make your own! You can also use this recipe: 3 c. powdered sugar 1 c. nonfat dry milk 2 c. instant NesQuik or instant chocolate milk c. non dairy creamer 1 lg. (6-oz.) box instant chocolate pudding. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and store in air-tight container. To enjoy add 3 T. to a cup of boiling water. (Adjust to taste!) Serve with a candy cane, mini marshmallows, and Hershey kisses. Enjoy!
Polar Bear Sandwich You will need: English muffin Cream cheese Hard boiled egg Apple slice Blueberries Grapes Red peppers Create a polar bear sandwich using an English muffin and spread with cream cheese for the head. Add egg halves for the ears, an apple slice for the snout, blueberries for the eyes, a grape half for the nose, and red peppers for the mouth.

Snow Ice Cream Create your own snow ice cream! 8 c. clean snow 1-1.5 c. milk c. sugar tsp. vanilla Gather 8 c. clean snow. Add the milk, sugar, and vanilla. Stir and enjoy! Polar Bear Oreo Create a polar bear Oreo by dipping an Oreo in white chocolate. Add mini marshmallows as ears; brown M&Ms or chocolate chips as eyes; a raisin for a nose!
Banana Snowman You will need: Banana slices Apple wedge Blueberry Mini chocolate chips Piece of carrot Celery slices Bamboo skewer Slice bananas fairly thick. Create a snowman by skewing 3 banana slices on a bamboo skewer. Top with an apple hat for each snowman and a blueberry. Use mini chocolate chips for eyes and buttons and a tiny carrot slice for a nose. Add thinly sliced celery pieces as arms.

Snowflake Snack Dip 4 small pretzels in white chocolate and press together in a circle to create a snowflake! Penguin Snack You will need: * An English muffin * A carrot * Cream cheese * Sliced black olives Slice the carrot and cut 2 small triangles in 2 pieces for the feet. Save one of the triangle pieces to use as a beak. Separate and toast the English muffin. Next, cut each side of one half of the muffin to create 2 wings for your penguin. Spread cream cheese on the penguins belly and lay it on plate. Arrange wings next to your penguin. Add carrot beak and feet and an olive slice for an eye.

COLOR: WHITE
Make White Play dough Use the attached recipe to make bright white play dough. Roll the dough into balls to make snowballs! Build snowmen and snow castles by decorating them with buttons, twigs, and beads. Roll out dough with a rolling pin and cut out snowflakes, stars, or angels. Use play dough to form a play snowscape. Play with penguins, seals, polar bears, etc. Color Shopping In a white bag, go color shopping! Fill up your bag with things that are white! Snowman handprint Paint childs hand white and stamp onto black paper. Once dry, add faces to the fingers and thumb with markers to create snowmen. Add glitter if desired.

Handprint Snowflake Discuss how snowflakes have 6 points. Paint hand white and stamp 6 times on blue paper. Cut out. Glue together in a circle (palms together with fingers facing out), creating a snowflake. Snowflake Matching Print the attached snowflake cards on cardstock and play match/memory with them to review other colors.
White Snacks Coconut, marshmallows, hard boiled eggs, milk, whipped cream, rice, Swiss cheese, onion, white bread, mushrooms, cauliflower, sour cream, vanilla ice cream, mashed potatoes, fish, almonds, bananas, white chocolate, Angel food cake, alfredo sauce. White Song (Tune: Little Brown Jug) W-h-i-t-e That spells white. Sing with me. Milk is white, and so is glue. Ghosts are white, And they say BOO! W-h-i-t-e That spells white, Sing with me. The clouds are above The snow below, Santas beard, Ho Ho Ho! Mary Had a Little Lamb This would be a great time to learn Mary Had a Little Lamb nursery rhyme. Emphasize the line that says fleece was white as snow. Create your own handprint lamb by tracing childs hand on black paper. (Or consider using your own hand to create a larger lamb template.) The 4 fingers will become the lambs legs and the thumb will be the lambs head. Glue white cotton balls over the palm area, and draw eyes and mouth on the thumb area. Color of the Day Activities for any Color Everyone dresses in the color of the day! Add desired color to playdough and use at the art table. Take a walk to look for that particular color of car.
Dip cooked spaghetti in the desired color of paint and let it dance across white paper. Make necklaces by stringing buttons of the desired color onto wire. Add food coloring to the white glue. Tint jello, water, milk, or pancakes purple. Go color shopping and walk from room to room shopping for items in the house that are specific color.
NUMBER: TWO
Number 2 Pattern Print the attached number 2 pattern. Decorate it with 2 snowmen or snowflake stickers or stamps. Writing 2 Use this rhyme to help your children remember how to write the number 2: Around and back on the railroad track Two! Two! Two! I like to practice writing numbers in fingerpaint, shaving cream, or using Crayolas window crayons. Shoe Mix-up Take off shoes and put them in the middle of the room. Mix up the shoes and have children take turns finding two shoes that match. Card/Domino Search Search for the twos in a deck of cards. You could also search for dominos that have just 2 dots on them. Songs A Bicycle Built For Two. (Observe that a real bicycle has 2 large wheels.) Two Snacks Demonstrate cutting foods in half. Cut sandwich in half. Eat two graham crackers, etc. Emphasize that there are TWO. Binocular craft Decorate toilet paper tube with markers. Use masking tape to tape the 2 tubes together like binoculars. Two Color Paper Chains Make a paper chain by rotating two colors. For example, white, blue, white, blue.
Rhyme Two Little Blackbirds Way up high in a big old tree, Two little black birds smiled at me. The first one said, Lets fly away. The second one said, I think I will stay So the first flew off, way up high To look for rainbows in the sky. The second bird stayed and built a nest. She loved the tree. She thought it best. Each was happy in its own way. One chose to go, one chose to stay. Tactile Learning Cut the numeral 2 out of sand paper. Have child trace with his/her finger. You could also do a rubbing of the numeral by placing paper on the top and coloring over it. Noahs ark This would be a great time to share the story of Noahs Ark, emphasizing how the animals marched two by two. Hokey Pokey Sing the Hokey Pokey using the number two. You put your two arms in, You put your two arms out, You put your two arms in, And you shake it all about. You do the Hokey-Pokey And you turn yourself around. Thats what its all about! Repeat with two hands, two legs, two feet, two eyes, two ears, etc.
LETTER W
W is for Winter Cut a W out of black paper using the attached pattern. Create a winter scene by stamping wagon wheels pasta OR honey comb cereal in white paint and then onto the W. Add glitter before the paint dries. Feely Letter Glue wax paper or wool to a W shape. What does this feel like? Explore with your senses! W Letter Formation Create a W using white pipe cleaner or craft sticks. You could also make the shape of the letter W using your white play dough! Wiggle your arm (leg, nose, etc.) Make Your Own W book Make the attached W book by coloring the 4 pictures, cut them apart, and use them as your very own W book or flashcards. Review daily. W Snacks Enjoy some W Snacks including watermelon, whipped cream, waffles, walnuts, wafers, wontons, wings, Wheaties, water! W is for Coloring Pages Use the 3 attached W is for coloring pages to practice tracing and writing capital Ws. Color the attached pictures.
Creative Writing I like to practice writing in finger paint, shaving cream, sand, or using Crayolas window crayons. Sidewalk chalk is fun, too!
Snowman Button Game

Instructions Print the attached snowman on cardstock and laminate if desired. Give child a collection of buttons. Ask him/her to identify the numeral on the snowmans hat and place the correct number of buttons on the snowman.
Puzzles
Instructions Print the attached puzzles on cardstock. Laminate if desired. Cut the mitten into 6 pieces and store in plastic bag. Cut the snowman into 10 strips. Encourage child to identify numbers in order to put puzzle together. Store in plastic bag.

Build a Snowman Flannel Board Fun

Instructions Print the attached snowman flannel board story. Laminate if desired. Create your own snowman pieces out of flannel or felt so you can build a snowman! You will need: Black top hat, orange carrot nose, red scarf, 2 eyes, 3 white circles (1 small, 1 medium, 1 large), and 5 black circles for mouth. Teaching Tiny Tots has a great pattern if you would like to use this to create your own flannel board snowman. It is available by clicking here: Ask child to help you build a snowman on the flannel board while you read the rhyme!

Instructions Print the attached snowmen flannel board story. Laminate if desired. You can use this story/song as either a fingerplay or a flannel board story. Try both! Create your own 5 little snowmen out of felt or flannel. Invite your child to help. A Chubby Little Snowman Flannel Board Fun

Instructions Print the attached A Chubby Little Snowman flannel board story. Laminate if desired. You can use the same snowman you used for the Build a Snowman story. Ask child to help you tell this story by pretending to be the rabbit who steals the snowmans nose!
Snowman Soup
Instructions: Print the Snowman Soup poem and laminate for durability. You will need: A mug, white hot chocolate, hot water, Hersheys kisses, marshmallows, and candy cane. Recite the poem as you create Snowman Soup with your child!
Snowman Sequencing
Instructions: Print the snowman sequencing cards and laminate for durability. Cut apart into 4 cards. Help child to look at the pictures and place in sequential order. What happened first? What happened last? What happened in between?

Instructions You will need: * Scratch paper * Dice * Roll a Snowman sheet Help child to roll a dice and count the dots on the dice. Follow the Roll a Snowman rules sheet to draw a part of a snowman. Continue playing until you have a complete snowman!

Instructions Print the ABC Mittens on cardstock and laminate. Call out a letter of the alphabet for your child to find. Ask them to circle the letter with a dry erase marker. Erase with damp cloth and repeat!
