42. Economically inactive


Percentage of people of working age who are economically inactive, 1992 to 2006

Economically inactive since: 1992 1999

People who are economically inactive (neither employed nor actively seeking work) have
represented between 21 and 22 per cent of the working age population since 1992.
7.8 million people were economically inactive in 2005, up from 7.3 million in 1992. Of these
7.8 million, 40 per cent were male and 60 per cent female.
The percentage of men economically inactive rose from 13.5 per cent to 16.3 per cent. The
percentage for women fell from 29.2 per cent to 26.0 per cent.
