net A comparison of Julius Evola and Ren Gunon's theories as to the status of Alchemy as an independent Tradition in it's own right, incorporating alchemy in Europe, Greece, India, China, Egypt and the Middle East. Very different thinkers, but both are pushing a similar agenda in trying to remake alchemy in the image of c ontemporary (amodern/antimodern/postmodern) occultism. The biggest problem is th at historical alchemists weren't reacting to modernity, but I'm more concerned w ith the distortions of "Spiritual Alchemy" that we see in traditionalism. I thin k it's misleading to look at alchemy as an independent tradition because that ap proach closes the door to understanding how alchemy made sense in terms of the s pecifics of each historical period and religious context. But on the other hand the alchemists themselves liked to play similar games anachronistically claiming a tradition where there was no such thing!
