Theme is revealed through the lessons about life that the characters learn. Think of two lessons the protagonist learned as a result of what happened to her in the story. The lessons you write down will be possible themes of the story:

Situational Irony: It is the contrast between what happens and what was expected (or what would seem appropriate). Because it emerges from the events and circumstances of a story, it is often more subtle and effective than verbal or dramatic irony.

Foreshadowing: This is a writers technique in which the author provides clues or hints as to what is going to happen later in the story. It is like the music in a scary movie when we know that something bad is about to happen. Write down three clues in the story that indicated the necklace might not have been real. These are clues that happened before Mathilde found out it was not real.
